Fabi Riesen, the visionary founder and CEO of Loft Dynamics, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration. With a history of pioneering advancements in aviation technology, Alaska Airlines is once again taking the lead, transitioning from traditional pilot training methods to a more efficient, immersive VR approach. The investment, channeled through Alaska Star Ventures, the airline's corporate venture capital division, aims to solve the pressing issues of pilot training by addressing current challenges faced by the industry. In light of a global pilot shortage, this partnership signifies a timely and essential evolution in how pilots will be trained.
Pilot training has always relied heavily on traditional full-motion simulators. However, these simulators are known for their high costs, large footprints, and operational restrictions, limiting their accessibility. With Loft’s VR solution, Alaska Airlines aims to revolutionize this method by providing a more scalable and flexible training option. Capt. Jeff Severns, managing director of flight operations training at Alaska Airlines, spoke on the evolution of pilot training over the last three decades. He stated that the introduction of Loft's VR simulator could drastically transform the commercial pilot training landscape today. The proposed system will create a fully immersive environment, replicating real-world flight scenarios while fitting into a standard office space, thus enhancing training frequency and efficiency.
Alaska Airlines’ development plan for the Boeing 737 full-motion VR simulator includes collaboration with Loft’s flight operations training department, bringing together financial resources and expertise in aviation training. Once the simulators are fully developed, tested, and approved, they will be established at various Alaska bases to support pilot instruction. These sophisticated simulations will boast innovative features such as a six-degrees-of-freedom full-motion platform that can replicate realistic physics and offer haptic feedback through flight controls. Pilots will train immersed in a stunning 360-degree panoramic view that facilitates accurate perception both inside and outside the aircraft.
Furthermore, the simulators will support advanced full-body pose tracking, highlighting hand and body movements in real-time within the VR environment. Customization will be possible for training scenarios and conditions, enabling pilots to rehearse various maneuvers safely and reliably. This compact simulator will require only one-twelfth the space of conventional full-flight simulators, establishing greater flexibility and accessibility to pilot training modules.
In addition, the introduction of a Virtual Demonstration Mode allows instructors to record and replay immersive lessons for their pilots, creating a rich learning experience. All this training innovation will be complemented by the LoftSPATIAL app for Apple Vision Pro, empowering pilots to leverage spatial computing for continuous training opportunities, anytime and anywhere.
