Drivers at Genesis Logistics Secure Union Representation with Teamsters

Genesis Logistics Drivers Vote to Join Teamsters

In a powerful demonstration of unity, a significant majority of over 90% of the drivers at Genesis Logistics in Richmond, Virginia, have chosen to join Teamsters Local 322. This milestone represents not only a desire for improved working conditions but also a commitment to standing together against the challenges posed by their employer.

The 214 drivers, who are responsible for delivering goods to 7-Eleven convenience stores throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, are now focused on negotiating their first union contract. This decisive action comes in the wake of a strenuous anti-union campaign led by Genesis Logistics, a subsidiary of DHL Supply Chain. Many workers faced intimidation tactics, including surveillance and disciplinary actions aimed at union supporters, yet the resolve of the drivers remained unshaken.

Dwayne Johnson, the Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 322, expressed his admiration for the workers' tenacity. “I want to personally congratulate these workers and welcome them to our Teamsters family. Despite an aggressive campaign of illegal union busting, these workers remained determined to achieve the dignity and respect they deserved. Now, we're ready to fight alongside them to win a strong first Teamsters contract,” he stated.

A Unified Front Against Management

Matthew Relford, a driver for Genesis and now a proud member of Local 322, spoke about the reasons behind their historic vote. “We organized with the Teamsters because we've had enough — enough of the low pay, the lack of respect, and poor benefits. Management tried everything to stop us. But we stuck together and won. We're proud to be Teamsters, and we're ready to fight for what we've rightfully earned,” he emphasized.

The drive for union representation comes on the heels of a broader movement among workers at various companies seeking to improve their workplace conditions and pay. As more workers recognize the power of collective bargaining, unions like the Teamsters are experiencing a resurgence in membership and influence.

Implications for the Future

The action taken by Genesis drivers could have far-reaching implications not just for their own working conditions but could also inspire similar efforts in other sectors facing similar challenges. Organized labor has historically played a crucial role in advocating for workers' rights, and the resurgence of union activity in various industries suggests a shifting tide in how workers seek to assert their rights and improve their livelihoods.

As the drivers prepare for negotiations, they stand hopeful not only for improvements in their own working conditions but as a symbol of resistance against exploitative labor practices. They look forward to setting a precedent for others in the industry to follow.
