Hong Kong and Guangdong Celebrate the Year of the Horse

On the night of February 18, the vibrant city of Hong Kong kicked off the Chinese New Year celebrations with the breathtaking "Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong" fireworks display, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club. This event was not only a feast for the eyes but also a heartfelt tribute to the significance of horses and horse racing in the local culture.

A Spectacle of Lights

The festivities lit up the skyline of Victoria Harbour, with a stunning 23-minute fireworks show that dazzled onlookers with over 31,888 pyrotechnic shells. Spectators gathered along the waterfront, where the atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation. The display prominently featured horse-themed visuals and auspicious symbols representing good fortune as the city welcomed the Year of the Horse. Symbols like horseshoes illuminated the night sky, creating a majestic ambiance reminiscent of galloping horses.

A Unified Celebration

At a special ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, distinguished guests, including HKSAR Chief Executive The Hon John KC Lee, gathered to celebrate this significant occasion. Chief Executive Lee acknowledged the importance of the Year of the Horse in the context of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan and expressed determination for Hong Kong’s continuous progress and alignment with the national strategy.

The Honorable Martin Liao, Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, emphasized the auspiciousness of the Year of the Horse for the Club. He articulated the Club's commitment to enhancing the community through equestrian sports and highlighted the Club's role in contributing to the betterment of society and generating charitable support for local needs.

Equally Grand Celebrations in Guangdong

The festivities extended beyond Hong Kong to Conghua, Guangzhou, where a spectacular combination of drones and fireworks also celebrated the Year of the Horse. Approximately 1,200 drones filled the skies with dynamic horse racing imagery and vibrant symbols of good luck, delighting viewers and marking the arrival of a prosperous new year.

Looking Forward

As part of the Year of the Horse campaign, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is set to kick off world-class racing at the newly developed Conghua Racecourse in October, which will be a key highlight marking the Club’s commitment to promoting the equine industry within the Greater Bay Area.

The Year of the Horse campaign is not merely about fireworks and celebrations; it embodies a community gathering, showcasing international equestrian events, and fostering cultural connection through sports. By celebrating this cherished animal and its role in the city’s sporting culture, the Jockey Club aims to offer an entertaining experience for both locals and visitors, while also enhancing community welfare.
