NPG's Earth Day 2026 Campaign Aims to Highlight Population Growth's Impact

NPG Launches Earth Day 2026 Educational Campaign

On April 2, 2026, Negative Population Growth (NPG) initiated its Comprehensive Earth Day 2026 Educational Campaign. The initiative aims to educate the nation about the connection between population size and environmental sustainability. This campaign resonates profoundly as the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals an increase of approximately 1.8 million individuals in the U.S. population from July 2024 to July 2025, translating to a growth rate of about 0.5 percent. While this increase might seem minor in percentage terms, the fact that nearly two million more people are relying on the same natural resources has significant environmental repercussions.

Through this campaign, NPG endeavors to engage leaders and educators across the country, fostering greater awareness of how demographic trends intersect with ecological challenges. This effort involves outreach to governors and mayors of the 250 largest cities, encouraging them to incorporate discussions around population issues during Earth Day events and speeches. NPG advocates for acknowledgment of the impact of continuous population growth on environmental health.

Additionally, the organization is distributing educational materials, including a dedicated Earth Day poster and a Student Fact Sheet, to over 1,500 middle and high school educators nationwide. By providing these resources, NPG hopes to motivate teachers to incorporate lessons about population trends and their impact on the environment into their curricula, enlightening students about the significance of sustainable practices in light of population growth.

Executive Director Craig Lewis emphasized NPG's longstanding connection to Earth Day, dating back to the foundation of the organization in 1972, shortly following the inaugural Earth Day in 1970. He stated, “For decades, NPG staff and members have actively participated in Earth Day initiatives, advocating for the importance of sustainable stewardship of our planet. Our goal this year is to ensure that conversations about population trends remain a central theme in dialogues around environmental sustainability and resource management.”

In alignment with the campaign’s objectives, NPG plans to run print advertisements in popular publications. These ads aim to raise public awareness about how population growth affects the environment and promote NPG’s extensive educational efforts aimed at mitigating these impacts.

Since its inception, NPG has sought to educate both the public and policymakers regarding the consequences of overpopulation. The organization remains committed to fostering sustainable levels of population growth to maintain a balance with environmental resources. NPG actively supports the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, which aims to stabilize the U.S. population significantly lower than current levels. Their mission is clear: not only to highlight the challenges associated with overpopulation but also to propose actionable solutions.
