ArtPrize 2024 Economic Impact
ArtPrize 2024 has made headlines by generating an astounding $71 million boost to the Grand Rapids economy, according to a recent study from Grand Valley State University. This figure represents a significant 30% increase compared to the $54.7 million reported in 2023. The annual art competition's growing economic footprint underscores its importance to the local community.
In addition to the remarkable economic uplift, ArtPrize contributed over $260,000 in new tax revenue for Kent County, sourced from hotel stays, sales, and various spending activities by attendees. Furthermore, the event played a crucial role in creating 547 local jobs, solidifying its status as a vital driver for regional economic development.
Catlin Whitington, the Executive Director of ArtPrize, expressed excitement over these findings, saying, "We’re thrilled to see the tremendous economic and cultural contributions of ArtPrize 2024. This event not only drives measurable economic outcomes but also amplifies the intangible value of art and culture. It fosters community engagement, energizes our vibrant urban core, and brings a unique, global celebration to Grand Rapids."
Spanning 16 days, ArtPrize attracted nearly 800,000 visitors to the district, with many expressing a strong intent to return to Grand Rapids in the future. The event's consistent increase in attendance has had a profound effect on local businesses, allowing them to experience sustained growth during the competition.
Richard App, the Retail Retention and Attraction Specialist from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, noted, "Throughout its 15-year history, ArtPrize has continued to evolve to benefit artists, visitors, and the community. By enlarging the footprint to include adjacent downtown business districts, ArtPrize is providing other neighborhoods with a chance to participate while broadly expanding its economic impact across our community and showcasing its vibrant neighborhoods."
Doug Small, President and CEO of Experience Grand Rapids, reflected on the festival’s evolution, stating, "As ArtPrize has evolved over its 15-year history, a few important things have remained constant: inspiration, innovation, and impact. Each year, the organizers innovate to keep the event fresh and enhance the vitality of our destination, culminating in significant economic benefits for our small businesses and hotel partners throughout Kent County."
