In Support of Pedestrian Safety: Maglite, PSI and Partners
As we enter July—a month recognized for increased traffic risks—
Maglite is joining forces with the
Pedestrian Safety Institute (PSI) and several strategic partners to highlight the severe dangers pedestrians face. The first week of July ranks among the most hazardous days for drivers and walkers alike, often referred to as the deadliest driving days of the year, particularly around the July 4th celebrations. This period sees approximately 20% of traffic fatalities involving pedestrians, an alarming statistic driven by a growing trend of pedestrian accidents.
According to the
Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 3,304 pedestrians tragically lost their lives in the first half of 2024, which is a slight decrease of 2.6% from 2023 but a staggering 48% increase from a decade ago in 2014. This means that 2024 is on track to be one of the deadliest years for pedestrians on record. It is particularly concerning that 82% of these fatalities occurred in low-light conditions—dusk, darkness, or dawn—highlighting the pressing need for increased visibility.
Increase of Fatalities as Days Shorten
The concerns do not end after July 4th. Research suggests that the rate of pedestrian deaths tends to rise significantly during the final months of the year—October, November, and December—due to shorter days and limited visibility. To combat these risks, the PSI is urging pedestrians to take proactive steps to ensure they are seen, especially at night. One recommended solution is carrying a flashlight, like those provided by Maglite.
Joining this crucial initiative, several organizations and experts, including the
American Paramedic Association,
Citizens Behind the Badge, and
Dr. Currie Myers, a criminologist, have partnered with Maglite and PSI. They strive to create awareness of the dangers pedestrians encounter and suggest practical solutions to mitigate these risks.
“Increased vigilance is necessary during this precarious period,” stated
Tony Maglica, founder and CEO of Mag Instrument, Inc., which manufactures Maglite flashlights. He added, “We can take simple yet effective measures to decrease pedestrian fatalities. For example, pedestrians should not only carry a bright flashlight but also wear reflective clothing and remain vigilant near busy traffic areas.”
Educating the Public
The initiative follows the launch of
National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month, an observance created by the PSI to reiterate the importance of cautious driving and pedestrian awareness, especially during the summertime when traffic fatalities tend to spike.
Mag Instrument has a long-standing tradition of quality craftsmanship and precision since its establishment in 1955. Over the decades, the company has evolved from a one-man shop to a prominent U.S. manufacturer employing thousands. Their commitment to safety and engineering excellence is evident in their dedication to sustaining public awareness on critical issues concerning safety.
As we approach the holidays and the busy summer travel season, it is vital for pedestrians and drivers to remain informed and take an active role in creating a safer community. Carrying a flashlight can provide visibility and significantly reduce the chances of accidents. Let us all work towards making our streets safer—one step at a time.
