Morinaga Confectionery Co., based in Tokyo, has launched a project titled "Supporting Those Who Strive Under the Heat." The initiative aims to provide relief to kitchen staff and caregivers during the scorching summer months. On July 29, the company distributed its famous Icebox ice cups to the kitchen team at Musashino University’s LOHAS Café, followed by a distribution for caregivers at the Charm Sweet nursing home on August 3.

The Icebox is designed to be a refreshing solution during hot days, especially for those dedicated professionals who support the safety and well-being of others amid soaring temperatures. The project is particularly timely, as heatwaves have become more frequent, putting increased pressure on workers in construction sites, event venues, care facilities, schools, and sports settings.

Rationale Behind the Project

With the relentless rise in summer heat, finding effective ways to cope with rising temperatures has become critical. The Icebox aims to grant a moment of coolness and a chance to recharge for individuals who ensure the safety and enjoyment of others. This year marks the 3rd anniversary of the project, which was initiated in 2021 to counteract the effects of heat on frontline workers.

Last year, during the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL, the Icebox stand offered refreshing cups to festival staff, helping tackle heat stress and fostering discussions about hydration and taking breaks. Positive feedback from participants emphasized the Icebox's utility as a delicious refreshment and an important tool for staying hydrated.

For continuous updates and stories of the beneficiaries, a special website has been established. This platform shares firsthand accounts and reports, revealing the challenges faced by those on the frontlines during sweltering days. Morinaga's commitment remains strong, as the Icebox aims to reach out to diverse workplaces, including sports events, leisure activities, educational institutions, and welfare services.

Efficacy of the Icebox for Heat Management

- Functional Benefits: The Icebox boasts a hypotonic quality which aids quick rehydration, complemented with sodium, vitamin C, and citric acid—ingredients that work excellently for post-exercise recovery.
- Cool Down Easily: The outer surfaces of the Icebox can be used to cool down pulse points, such as wrists and necks. With ice cooling efficiently—removing up to four times more heat than water—this product serves as an ideal choice for emergency heat relief. Experiments showed that consuming Icebox significantly lowered body temperature by 0.36°C when compared to regular water after sauna use.
- Versatile Usage: Enjoy it as is, mix it into drinks, or toss some in a personal bottle for chilling moments.

Upcoming Sampling Initiatives

In addition to past distributions, there are plans for further offerings:

- Seibu-en Amusement Park Pool Staff: Conducted on July 14, the sampling received rave reviews, showcasing Icebox's effectiveness in combating extreme heat.
- Enoshima Beach Lifeguards: Sampling for lifeguards happened during the beach peak on July 20, where they shared how the Icebox helped them maintain focus while ensuring public safety.
