ANA Becomes the Front Sponsor for Smokey Mountain Baseball Project 2025!

ANA Partners with Smokey Mountain Baseball Project 2025

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has proudly taken on the role of the front sponsor for the Smokey Mountain Baseball Project (SMBP) 2025, a social initiative organized by the NB.ACADEMY based in Shibuya, Tokyo. The project aims to provide opportunities for underprivileged children living in the slums of Manila by introducing them to the world of baseball, ultimately expanding their horizons and potential for the future.

Overview of the Smokey Mountain Baseball Project

The SMBP is dedicated to teaching baseball to children in the Smokey Mountain area of Manila, an infamous slum heavily affected by poverty. The initiative not only focuses on baseball training but also assists children in obtaining scholarships for high school and university. Since its inception in 2012, the project has been held annually, gathering former professional baseball players who visit Manila to conduct baseball clinics and engage with the local community. This year marks the 14th anniversary of the SMBP, with approximately 100 children expected to participate, supported by a team of 30 Japanese volunteers and six former baseball professionals.

Background of the Smokey Mountain Area

The Smokey Mountain, situated north of Manila, was once home to a massive garbage dump, now recognized as Southeast Asia's largest slum. The area got its name due to the constant fires that burn through the tons of trash discarded there, with locals often scavenging through the debris for recyclable materials to sustain their living. As the residents struggle to survive in such harsh conditions, fostering dreams and hopes becomes increasingly challenging.

Upcoming SMBP Events

The project will take place from May 23 to 25, 2025, featuring special guests including Michihiro Ogasawara, a prominent member of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, and renowned YouTube traveler Manpe. YouTube star and former professional baseball player Takayuki Kajitani will also be in attendance, alongside other key participants. This initiative provides a rare opportunity for volunteers to experience life in the slums firsthand, building a deeper understanding of the significance of social contribution.

Insights from Sponsors and Partners

According to Naomasa Takayanagi, the Executive Officer of ANA's Asia and Oceania Division, the airline is thrilled to support the SMBP once again this year. Having operated flights from Narita to Manila since 2011, ANA looks forward to deepening its connections with the Filipino community through this sports project, hoping to create excitement and positivity for both the Philippines and the world.

Shogo Shibata, the representative director of NB.ACADEMY, emphasized the 14-year-long collaboration with the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame and the local JCI Manila organization. He shares that many volunteers often express how the initiative continues to inspire them, with children in the community reciprocating their energy and positivity.
