Addressing Food Waste in Disaster Preparedness
In recent years, the push for ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and BCP (Business Continuity Planning) has become increasingly pronounced. However, a staggering one-quarter of municipal food stockpiles are reportedly expired and discarded, posing a growing societal issue of ‘hidden food waste’ in disaster preparedness food sectors. A recent survey conducted by NINZIA on
Disaster Prevention Day revealed that
49% of the 300 respondents perceived disaster foods as unappetizing. Furthermore,
53% found expiration management challenging. Nearly
40% admitted they were unaware of their organization's stockpiling location, while
35% stated they had no stockpiles at all, highlighting gaps in disaster preparedness systems.
To tackle this pressing issue, NINZIA launched its
NINZIA BOSAI brand, focusing on the theme of ‘display, taste, and plant-based’. With an emphasis on sustainability, the brand offers
phase-free foods that are not only suitable for disaster situations but also ideal for daily meals. Their plant-based spicy curry avoids the use of animal-derived fats, ensuring that the food remains fresh without solidifying at room temperature, thereby achieving both functionality and satisfaction in taste during emergencies.
By installing ‘display disaster foods’ in office environments and creating a system where all employees can quickly access their stockpiling locations, they aim to foster a culture of preparedness and minimize risks associated with stock shortages during disasters.
The Sustainable Food Museum
The Sustainable Food Museum, established by UR Urban Development Corporation, Libanus Co., Ltd., Sustainable Food Asia, UnlocX Corporation, and Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate, serves as the core facility within a framework that brings together diverse players to tackle societal challenges through food in Tokyo’s new Shinbashi-Toranomon area. With a focus on sustainable food, it aims to nurture innovation that arises from community and corporate collaboration while showcasing new values.
