Celebrating 150 Years of Nagano
The year 2026 will mark a significant milestone for Nagano Prefecture as it celebrates its 150th anniversary since its establishment. To honor this special occasion, Seven-Eleven Japan, with its headquarters in Tokyo's Chiyoda district, has announced the launch of a special event titled the “Nagano 150th Anniversary Fair.” Officially starting on August 4, the fair will showcase a variety of products inspired by Nagano's rich culinary heritage, particularly through local fermentations like miso and koji, alongside traditional vegetables native to the region.
Local Collaboration and Product Launches
The fair features 21 unique products made in collaboration with various enterprises and organizations within Nagano. The initiative aims to promote local ingredients and bolster the sustainable economy through collaborations that involve educational institutions. For instance, students from the Okayama Gakuen Total Design Academy have contributed to the packaging design and product development, fostering a sense of community between industry, government, and academia. This project is centered around creating offerings that resonate with the regional identity and enhance local pride.
As part of the first phase launched on August 4, the products include items that harmonize the flavors of miso—particularly notable is the timing with “Fermentation Day” on August 5. The second phase kicks off on August 11, leading up to the official anniversary date on August 21.

The Significance of Nagano's 150th Anniversary
Nagano was officially established on August 21, 1876, through the merger of various regions. As we approach this landmark in 2026, the fair endeavors to commemorate not just the history, but also to foster a sense of unity among residents as they come together to appreciate what Nagano has to offer. Various initiatives are being undertaken to immerse residents and visitors alike in the values and charm that have shaped Nagano over the years.
Collaboration with Local Entities
One of the notable collaborations is with the Botan Kojo Preservation Society, which started in 2013. Together, they aim to promote the traditional Botan Kojo pepper through various food items. Products like Botan Kojo-flavored onigiri and spicy pasta are testament to their long-standing commitment to preserving and celebrating local cuisine.
In this fair, the Nagano Prefectural Character “Arukuma” will feature prominently on product packaging, emphasizing local pride and connections. As part of a broader effort to foster sustainable practices, the fair seeks to inspire a new generation of potential innovators and caretakers for Nagano's culinary traditions.
As the festivities unfold, we can expect more unique culinary experiences, driven by local insights and craftsmanship. Stay tuned for more details leading up to the big anniversary celebration and join in the festivities that honor Nagano’s rich history and vibrant future.
