A New Era at Charles Krug Winery
In September 2025, Charles Krug Winery, recognized as Napa Valley's oldest vineyard, reached a historic milestone with the appointment of Angelina Mondavi as its lead winemaker. This significant change marks the first time a woman, hailing from the illustrious Mondavi family, steps into this pivotal role, fulfilling a long-held aspiration.
Angelina's journey is reflective of deep family ties and rich tradition. Raised on the grounds of Charles Krug, she was intimately woven into the fabric of vineyard life from an early age. Experiences such as riding harvesters, assisting in the winery during crushing season, and blending wines alongside her grandfather, Peter Mondavi Sr., solidified her determination to join the family business. "By the time I was ten, I knew I wanted to be involved here," she remarked, emphasizing the profound attachment to her family's legacy.
The Mondavi lineage has a remarkable history: her grandfather led the winery from 1945 to 1990, followed by her father, Marc Mondavi, who continued the prestigious lineage until now, with Angelina taking the reins of winemaking. "This isn’t merely employment—it's my true vocation," she expressed with heartfelt conviction, underscoring the depth of her commitment to the industry.
Angelina stands out not only for her familial lineage but also for her academic prowess. Having earned a degree in chemistry and a minor in Business from Villanova University, along with a Master's degree in winemaking from the University of Adelaide, she blends technical expertise with creative artistry. Over more than 35 harvests around the globe, she has crafted acclaimed wines, recognized for their balance and distinctive character, in regions such as Napa Valley, Australia, and Argentina.
Since stepping into the role of Consulting Winemaker in 2022, Angelina focused on signature projects at Charles Krug, particularly the esteemed Family Reserve. With her new role, she now oversees all aspects of winemaking from vineyard to bottle, infusing her vision for the estate’s collections—including Napa Valley, Limited Release, and Family Reserve wines.
Reflecting on her journey, Angelina noted the poignant nature of this moment. Working as an assistant winemaker under Stacy Clark at Pine Ridge laid the groundwork for her future. Now, nearly 20 years later, she has the honor of leading the winery into its next chapter, embodying the ethos of her mentor. "Stacy was instrumental to my growth as a winemaker. It's a privilege to carry on her legacy while bringing my vision to light," she said appreciatively.
As for the future, Angelina has clear aspirations to produce wines that resonate on an international level, while safeguarding the authenticity inherent in her family's heritage. "I envision each bottle we create as a representation of the Mondavi family table, be it a casual wine for everyday enjoyment or a Family Reserve crafted for life's milestones," she articulated, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the family’s storied tradition.
Founded in 1861 and under the stewardship of the Mondavi family since 1943, Charles Krug remains a cornerstone of Napa Valley's wine culture. Today, with Angelina Mondavi guiding its winemaking, a renewed vision for the estate’s future is on the horizon, as the third and fourth generations of the family carry forth a legacy that continues to flourish.
