Big Smiles and Soccer: The Impact of JFA-Kirin Initiative in Wajima City

Bringing Joy to the Noto Peninsula: JFA-Kirin Big Smile Field

On June 14, 2024, Wajima City witnessed a heartwarming event aimed at fostering community spirit and helping the area recover from the earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula. The initiative, called the "JFA-Kirin Big Smile Field in Wajima City Machino Area," was part of an ongoing project established by Kirin Holdings and the Japan Football Association (JFA) to support the local community through the beautiful game of soccer.

This was the seventh event in a series launched in May 2023, following the devastating shake of January 1, 2024. To make the day even more special, the much-loved Samurai Blue soccer player Shuto Machino made a surprise appearance. With joy radiating across the ages, the community could hardly contain their excitement as this fan favorite showed up to support the people who had been rallying behind him since the start of his career.

During the event, Machino shared his thoughts with the crowd. "I'm finally able to be here in Machino! I'm so happy to connect with everyone through soccer!" His presence brightened the day, enveloping everyone in an atmosphere of unity and joy. From young children to senior citizens, participants embraced the art of walking football, engaging in collaborative play that transcended age and skill differences.

The day was hosted at Toyo Junior High School in Wajima City. Notable former Japanese national team players, Akihiro Nagashima and Nagasuke Nakanishi, joined as guests, energizing the people with their enthusiasm for the sport and for the community's enduring spirit.

One participant from Machino, a woman in her fifties, expressed her disbelief and joy upon seeing Machino: "I was shocked to see him here! I have been cheering for him, and I am so happy!" Similarly, a first-grade girl remarked, "I had so much fun playing with my grandpa; I want to do it again!"

The JFA-Kirin Big Smile Field project emphasizes inclusivity. The unique format of walking football allows everyone, regardless of age, gender, or previous soccer experience, to enjoy the game and bond with one another. The focal point of this collaborative initiative is to foster smiles and connections among participants. Kirin and JFA have recognized the need to continue these events to support recovery efforts, with additional events planned throughout 2025.

Planned events include matches scheduled in May in Noto Town and subsequent events in the Wajima region in June, catering to various community members and their diverse stories. "It's fantastic! I haven't had the opportunity to move my body in quite some time," said one participant, highlighting the joy and camaraderie that these games ignite.

Alongside walking football, community interactions and exchanges have become a key component of the Joy of Gathering. The connection between the people of Machino and Shuto Machino serves as a symbol of hope and unity, shared loudly through shared laughter and collaborative successes in sport.

Ultimately, the JFA and Kirin are committed to continuing these events in underserved areas, ensuring every member of the community can partake and find joy through soccer. The players donate their time and efforts, creating exciting memories for all involved. Therefore, connecting with the community also strengthens Machino’s resolve towards restoration, offering smiles and hope amidst adversity.

On the day of the event, the excitement and energy were palpable. After the opening speeches, where event organizers from Kirin and JFA expressed their gratitude to the attendees, the guests joined teams of participants to engage in spirited games. During the matches, teams brainstormed unique goal celebration performances, which were ambitious and creative, showcasing the festival-like atmosphere. "Fun is what it's all about! It was wonderful to have Machino here and the kids loved it!" exclaimed an elderly gentleman from the local area.

As the event came to a close, Shuto Machino shared his heartfelt message, “Though you may say you cheer for me, it isn’t just another story; it means the world to me. I promise to continue playing hard to bring smiles, not just here but across the globe!” The atmosphere was filled with appreciation as participants and guests exchanged well wishes, reinforcing bonds forged in moments of shared joy and laughter.

In the end, it's more than just a game; it's a beautiful reminder of community strength, resilience, and connectivity through the love of soccer.

As we move forward, events like this will continue to strengthen relationships in the community, and through every kick, pass, and goal, we help to heal the Noto Peninsula, one smile at a time.
