Tokyo's Urban Revitalization Symposium



The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is set to host a symposium aimed at discussing the strategies for urban revitalization in the aftermath of large-scale disasters, including earthquakes. This initiative seeks to engage citizens in imagining and planning how to rebuild their communities after such catastrophic events.

The symposium will take place on January 14th, 2024, from 14:00 to 18:00 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, 5th Floor Conference Room. It promises to be an insightful event featuring key speakers:

  • - Dr. Fumihiko Imamura, Vice President and Professor at Tohoku University
  • - Masahiro Mamiya, Executive Director of Kumamoto Prefecture

The discussions will revolve around the theme: "Preparing for Recovery from Large-Scale Disasters: Lessons Learned 15 Years After the Great East Japan Earthquake and 10 Years Since the Kumamoto Earthquake". Furthermore, a panel discussion will be held with Kazuki Nakabayashi, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Metropolitan University, focusing on preparedness for potential earthquakes in urban areas.

Highlights of the Event


To strengthen disaster prevention measures, the Tokyo government is promoting the undergrounding of power lines alongside land development. As part of this initiative, there will be an award ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions by businesses in this area. Additionally, students from local elementary and junior high schools will present their proposals on disaster preparedness.
