DuPont's MemCor™ MBR Systems Chosen for Three Major Wastewater Projects in England

DuPont's MemCor™ MBR Systems Selected for Major UK Wastewater Treatment Expansions

In an effort to enhance wastewater management and increase treatment capabilities, United Utilities has made a pivotal decision by selecting DuPont Water Solutions to supply MemCor™ membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems. This crucial technology will be implemented at three of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in North West England – located in Eccles, Salford, and Wigan. The Wigan facility, in particular, is set to become the largest MBR plant in the UK, serving a staggering population of over 437,000.

The project comes at an opportune moment when wastewater treatment standards are evolving to meet stringent environmental regulations. By integrating the advanced MemCor™ MBR technology, United Utilities aims to not only expand its wastewater treatment capacity but also ensure the production of high-quality treated water that meets these new requirements. Karla Butler, Vice President and General Manager at DuPont Water Solutions, expressed pride in being chosen as the partner for this significant undertaking. “Our technology will enable these facilities to achieve improved effluent standards,” she stated, reinforcing DuPont's commitment to enhancing the UK's water infrastructure.

Why MemCor™ MBR Technology?

The advanced MemCor™ MBR technology operates by combining conventional activated sludge treatment with high-performance membrane filtration. This results in superior effluent quality alongside high operational efficiency. Users can expect consistent performance with increased operational flexibility, all while minimizing maintenance requirements, which translates into substantial cost savings over time.

James Davies, Regional Delivery Manager at United Utilities, elaborated on the benefits of procuring MBR technology at this scale. “Early procurement gives us the advantage of economies of scale and enhances certainty in project delivery and standardization,” he noted. This strategic approach is designed to help the organization comply with tighter water quality standards while also providing long-lasting operational value to the communities they serve.

The implementation of MemCor™ MBR technology has a robust history, with over 30 years of proven efficiency and reliability. Now utilized in more than 300 municipal and industrial applications worldwide, it exemplifies DuPont’s dedication to public health and environmental sustainability. DuPont Water Solutions currently supports water purification across 112 countries, which includes delivering more than 50 million gallons of clean water every minute.

Future Outlook

This collaborative initiative not only emphasizes the need for advanced technologies in water treatment but also showcases the proactive steps taken by United Utilities and DuPont towards achieving operational resilience amidst increasing environmental challenges. By introducing these innovations in wastewater treatment, both companies are demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable practices that prioritize community health and safety.

DuPont continues to lead the way in providing state-of-the-art water purification solutions, addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by municipalities, industrial players, and desalination facilities. As the demand for efficient water treatment solutions grows, so too does DuPont's role in balancing global water and energy needs, ensuring a brighter future for all.
