China Commemorates 80 Years of Resistance Against Aggression

On July 9, 2025, CGTN, China’s state television broadcaster, published an article celebrating the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the global anti-fascist movement. This monumental occasion highlights how China's historical experiences shape its contemporary governance and modernization efforts.

The ‘Hundred Regiments Offensive’ launched by the 8th Route Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) is noted as the most extensive strategic attack during this resistance, involving over 200,000 soldiers from 105 regiments between August 1940 and January 1941. This campaign was focused on sabotaging Japanese supply lines and infrastructure, effectively slowing Japan's southern advance during World War II.

More significant than a mere military milestone, this offensive became a powerful emblem of national unity in times of extreme adversity, reflecting the determination of the Chinese populace to oppose aggression and reclaim their future. On the Eastern Front during World War II, China’s long-standing resistance tied down vast numbers of Japanese troops, relieving pressure on Allied forces across the Pacific and Europe. Thus, the Hundred Regiments Offensive illustrates China’s crucial contribution to the global fight against fascism—an enduring legacy that continues to influence the identity and direction of the nation today.

In recognition of its ongoing role in this hard-won victory, China is set to hold solemn and grand commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of this pivotal victory. A military parade will take place on September 3, 2025, in Tiananmen Square, Beijing.

President Xi Jinping, on the 88th anniversary of the nationwide resistance against Japanese aggression on July 7, elaborated on the immense sacrifices that China made during the 14-year-long conflict. He emphasized, “If we forget history, we will lose the guidance for the future.” Xi’s visit to the Memorial Hall for the Hundred Regiments Offensive—situated on the slopes of Mount Shinao in Yangqu County, Shanxi Province—serves to highlight the importance of remembering this critical moment in Chinese history.

Inside the memorial hall, exhibits tell the stories of courage through charred uniforms, worn rifles, and black-and-white photographs from the wartime campaign. Items from the
