Shanghai Electric Launches Sino-Pakistan Academy to Empower Engineers in the Belt and Road Initiative

Shanghai Electric's Vision for Engineering Excellence

On November 24, 2025, Shanghai Electric officially inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers, a significant step towards nurturing talent aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative. This academy represents a collaborative effort between Shanghai Electric and the Shanghai Dianji University, leading the way for innovation and technology exchange between China and Pakistan.

The launch event was held both online and in-person across three locations in the two countries. During this event, representatives from the Thar Block I coal and power integrated project and Shanghai Dianji University signed a cooperation agreement, marking the beginning of the academy's training program. This initiative addresses the urgent need for highly skilled engineers who possess theoretical knowledge, engineering practice, and the ability to work in international and multicultural environments.

Zhu Zhaokai, the president of Shanghai Electric Group, emphasized the importance of creating a deep integration between industry and academia through this academy. He stated, "The establishment of the Academy is a significant initiative by Shanghai Electric to promote in-depth integration of industry, academia, research, and practical application. It aims to build an international talent training system."

A Bridge for Technological and Cultural Exchange
Gong Siyi, the rector of Shanghai Dianji University, acknowledged the academy's role as a vital mechanism for fostering technological and cultural cooperation between the two nations. He revealed that the academy will offer tailor-made master's programs focusing on energy and electrical engineering, closely aligned with the demands of the Thar project. Through a dual mentorship system involving faculty and industry experts, the program intends to equip students with the skills necessary for addressing real-world challenges by merging theoretical education with practical experience.

In recent years, Shanghai Electric has prioritized systematic talent cultivation and strategic planning for the academy, enhancing collaboration between industry and education. This dual focus is expected to foster an innovation ecosystem that emphasizes globalization and advanced technology integration.

Setting High Standards for Talent Development
Since its inception in 2024, the Shanghai Electric Academy has been dedicated to developing technological experts and high-level professionals. It has become a crucial platform for developing the next generation of leaders in technology and engineering. As part of its flagship initiative, the Academy has been organizing the Expert Technology Symposium, providing a unique forum for leading experts and academics to exchange knowledge and collaborate on technical development. The symposium has hosted five sessions to date, showcasing cutting-edge technological trends and practical engineering insights.

In pursuit of sustained innovative growth, Shanghai Electric is committed to positioning talent as its primary strategic resource. In the first half of 2025 alone, the company invested ¥2.546 billion in research and development, marking a year-on-year increase of 9.4%, representing 4.7% of its total revenue. Notably, 39.5% of this investment was allocated to emerging sectors.

As the academy progresses, Shanghai Electric aims to strengthen its talent development system, establishing a well-structured and robust team to navigate the rapid changes in technology and industry. With a focus on fostering an inclusive and comprehensive educational environment, the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers aspires to become a centerpiece of Sino-Pakistani relations and a model for international engineering education.
