'Banfan': A Culinary Revolution with Calrose Rice
On December 11, the USA Rice Federation's Japan office hosted an exciting media event at Eric South Masala Diner in Jingumae, introducing a new culinary creation, 'Banfan', made with Calrose rice. This initiative aims to increase awareness and promote the unique characteristics of Calrose rice, originally created in California.
The mastermind behind 'Banfan' is Executive Chef Shunsuke Inada, who has played a significant role in shaping the current biryani trend in Japan. He has developed 'Banfan' as a new category of rice dish that highlights the light texture and compatibility of Calrose rice with various ingredients and seasonings, making it perfect for mixing.
During the event, Chef Inada showcased six diverse versions of 'Banfan', each inspired by different culinary genres including Western, Japanese, and ethnic cuisines. Attendees had the opportunity to sample these creations and experience the delightful flavors firsthand. Notably, Chef Inada demonstrated the preparation of 'Shrimp Lettuce Banfan', a delicious fried rice variation that does not require frying to achieve its satisfying taste.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, sparking interest in both the deliciousness of 'Banfan' and the potential of Calrose rice. Chef Inada shared his excitement about the endless possibilities of combining 'delicious food' with 'Calrose'. He encouraged consumers to explore their creativity at home, to craft their own versions of 'Banfan'.
The USA Rice Federation plans to continue promoting 'Banfan' through various events and marketing activities to ensure that more people can enjoy and appreciate this innovative dish made from Calrose rice.
What is Calrose Rice?
Calrose rice, known as ‘rose of California’, is a medium-grain variety originally developed in California. It stands between the short-grain rice, commonly found in Japan, and long-grain varieties like Thai rice, combining the best features of both. Calrose rice is known for its light texture and a pleasantly firm bite, characteristic of al dente cooking.
