Petrokimia Gresik Announces Ambitious Energy Transformation Program for 2024-2030 at COP29 Forum

Petrokimia Gresik Unveils 2024-2030 Energy Transformation Program

At the recent COP29 conference held on November 19, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, Petrokimia Gresik, a key player in the agro-industrial sector and a member of the Pupuk Indonesia group, unveiled an extensive energy transformation program that aims to significantly reduce emissions by 2030. This initiative comes as part of a broader global effort to combat climate change and promote decarbonization, addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Dwi Satriyo Annurogo, the CEO of Petrokimia Gresik, emphasized the company's commitment to achieving significant reductions in emissions and strengthening its decarbonization strategies during his presentation. He noted that this initiative aligns with the vision of Pupuk Indonesia to become a leader in the green industry and supports Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s goals for national food security and reaching net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.

Petrokimia Gresik plans to implement several key initiatives as part of their energy transformation program. Starting in 2024, they will transition the energy source for the Phonska V plant’s furnaces from coal to natural gas, a move projected to reduce emissions by approximately 22%. Additionally, the company is adopting electric vehicles into its operations, currently operating 180 electric motorcycles and eight electric cars supported by dedicated charging infrastructure.

The company has also introduced two electric forklifts and one electric wheel loader in its operations this year, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and emission reduction. Beyond these immediate changes, Petrokimia Gresik has already outlined a vision for further decarbonization from 2025 to 2030, which includes transitioning the Phonska IV plant’s furnace from coal to natural gas, replacing heating oil with gas in sulfuric acid production, co-firing biomass, building a hybrid green ammonia production facility, and other initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable practices.

During the presentation, Dwi Satriyo reiterated that the decarbonization efforts conform to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and comply with existing emission regulations. He anticipates that the rigorous decarbonization strategy planned for 2025-2030 will yield a substantial reduction of about 31.89% in emissions. Overall, the company aims to produce only 41,000 tons of carbon emissions by 2060, significantly below the NZE program's maximum target of 132,000 tons.

This ambitious program illustrates Petrokimia Gresik's proactive approach in fighting climate change and contributing to a sustainable future. Through their progressive strategies and commitment to innovation, they are not only paving the way for their own operations but also setting an example for others in the agro-industrial sector to follow suit in reducing their carbon footprints. The company's focus on integrating sustainable practices into its business model reflects a growing recognition of the importance of environmental responsibility in today’s global market.

As the world continues to confront the realities of climate change, initiatives like Petrokimia Gresik's energy transformation program serve as critical steps towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. By aligning their operational strategies with global decarbonization efforts, they are not only ensuring compliance with national regulations but also contributing meaningfully to the global fight against climate change.
