Embracing Mental Health Awareness Month with Practical Resilience Tools

Remarkably Resilient Together: A Push for Practical Action in Mental Health

As we enter May, which highlights Mental Health Awareness Month, a powerful initiative is encouraging both individuals and organizations to go beyond mere awareness. Remarkably Resilient Together (RRT) provides effective, easy-to-implement strategies to help people manage their emotional well-being and cultivate resilience.

Founded through the collaboration of trauma survivors and mental health professionals, RRT aims to simplify the neuroscience of trauma into actionable tools for daily life. The program emphasizes emotional regulation and self-care, skills that are critical for navigating stress, trauma, and life's unforeseen challenges.

Kathleen Harnish McKune, co-founder and CEO of Remarkably Resilient, emphasizes the importance of equipping people with practical tools, stating, "Most people never learn how to handle their emotional responses to stress or trauma, and Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder that support is crucial. But more importantly, it is an opportunity to arm individuals with applicable strategies they can use every day."

The RRT initiative stems from the lived experiences of the Harnish sisters, who have turned their background in trauma into a resource that is relatable and useful for a diverse audience. Catering to individuals, families, workplaces, correctional facilities, and community groups, their goal is to spread the message: you are not alone, and healing is within reach.

Karen Dickson, another co-founder, remarks, "When individuals have straightforward techniques to manage their feelings, it transforms their interaction with the world around them.” At the core of RRT are several user-friendly resources that can be applied in various contexts:

  • - “In the Moment” cards: These are designed to help individuals regulate their emotions during stressful situations.
  • - “Over Time” cards: Focusing on sustainable self-care practices, these cards encourage long-term well-being.
  • - Reflective Journal: This serves as a tool for leveraging learning, fostering growth, and cultivating resilience.

These resources are intentionally crafted to be straightforward and accessible, catering to anyone regardless of background or prior experience with mental health resources.

In a month where the spotlight typically shines on starting conversations about mental health, RRT goes one step further by offering practical applications of awareness. "Recognizing what’s happening within your body and having a method to respond can shift everything – from stress coping mechanisms to how you are present for others," McKune notes.

RRT partners with various community organizations to enhance accessibility to their materials, specifically targeting marginalized groups such as trauma survivors, foster children, incarcerated individuals, and professionals battling high levels of stress or secondary trauma.

Those in leadership roles in various sectors praise RRT's pragmatic approach. Tim DeWeese, LMSW, who directs the Johnson County Mental Health Center, says, "RRT stands out because it provides individuals with straightforward tools they can apply in real-time to manage stress and improve outcomes for clients and staff alike."

Holly Chavez, Corrections Manager for Kansas Department of Corrections, adds, "In high-stress settings, RRT is unique because it engages people where they are and equips them with practical tools that can be implemented immediately."

Throughout May and beyond, RRT invites individuals, workplaces, and communities to:

  • - Engage in discussions about mental health and trauma
  • - Employ straightforward emotional regulation methods
  • - Commit to ongoing, realistic self-care practices
  • - Share resources with others who might benefit

By merging awareness and proactive measures, RRT aims to help individuals build resilience while simultaneously strengthening communities. "It takes all of us to foster healing in one another," McKune concludes. "Healing is a collective journey. When people possess the skills to take care of themselves, they become better equipped to support others — and that’s where genuine change begins."
