Enhancing Road Safety: CFX Wrong-Way Driving Detection Expansion



The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) has made a significant stride in road safety by expanding its Wrong-Way Driving Detection (WWDD) and Prevention System. This proactive measure now encompasses 100% of off-ramps that are not situated within active construction zones, improving safety for drivers across a vast network of expressways spanning 125 miles.

The Significance of the Expansion



Over the past decade, the initiative has successfully prevented potential wrong-way incidents, with over 2,500 drivers successfully turning around before entering the expressway incorrectly. The documented turnaround rate stands at an impressive 88.6% from January 2016 through June 2026. The completion of this extensive coverage is not just a milestone for CFX; it demonstrates their commitment to road safety and driver awareness.

Michelle Maikisch, Executive Director of CFX, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “Reaching 100% coverage of our Wrong-Way Driving Detection and Prevention System is a significant achievement years in the making.” She emphasized the hard work put in by their team, the innovation from industry partners, and the cooperative effort with various organizations, including the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Highway Patrol. Together, they have established a system that actively mitigates wrong-way driving occurrences, enhancing the safety of all road users.

Partnership with the University of Central Florida



Further bolstering these efforts, CFX has collaborated with the University of Central Florida (UCF) to gather critical data regarding additional countermeasures. Research conducted over the past two years focused on the effectiveness of Internally Illuminated Raised Pavement Markers (iiRPMs) at nine different locations. The findings revealed a positive correlation between iiRPMs and an increase in nighttime turnaround rates, as well as a decrease in nighttime wrong-way driving detections. Notably, the implementation of iiRPMs exhibited statistically significant improvement, assisting wrong-way drivers in making turns around earlier on ramps compared to spots lacking the technology.

These insights are pivotal for CFX as they aid in evaluating, refining, and planning future expansions of the technology across their expressway network.

Future Developments in Wrong-Way Driving Prevention



In pursuit of further enhancing their WWDD program, CFX is currently piloting new technology aimed at monitoring the trajectories of wrong-way drivers beyond the warning notifications issued at off-ramps. By utilizing existing cameras and advanced software, the pilot program will chart the path of a wrong-way driver post-entrance onto the expressway, which will aid in developing more effective response strategies. This pilot is currently being tested over approximately five miles on a recently broadened stretch of State Road 417 between International Drive and John Young Parkway.

These advancements reflect CFX's commitment to safety in Central Florida, cultivating a travel experience that prioritizes the well-being of both residents and the influx of international visitors.
