Dr. Devin Stephenson: A Three-Time Honoree in Florida's Business Leadership
Dr. Devin Stephenson, the president of Florida Polytechnic University, has achieved significant recognition by being named to Florida Trend magazine's esteemed Florida 500 list for the third consecutive year. This list celebrates the 500 most influential business leaders in Florida, acknowledging their contributions to the state's economic development and progress.
Since taking the reins at Florida Poly in 2024, Stephenson has spearheaded a remarkable phase of growth for the university. This period has seen increased academic offerings, strengthened collaborations with industry partners, and a bolstered reputation nationally as a leading STEM institution.
In the current academic year, Florida Poly has welcomed over 2,300 students, marking a substantial 35% growth in just two years. This impressive milestone aligns with the university's strategic objective of reaching 3,000 students by 2030. "To be recognized alongside so many accomplished leaders across Florida for a third consecutive year is a tremendous honor," Stephenson remarked. He emphasized that this recognition reflects the collective momentum at Florida Poly and the hard work of the entire university community.
Stephenson's vision has also led to the university's consistent ranking as the No. 1 public college in the South for six years running, according to the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings. Notably, Florida Poly also ranked as the best value public school in the region and saw its engineering programs rise to No. 16 nationally among public institutions.
In WalletHub's 2027 College & University Rankings, Florida Poly achieved the impressive feat of being ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 among public institutions for career outcomes, topping renowned universities like MIT and Stanford. This highlights the institution’s commitment to providing a robust educational experience that translates to successful careers for graduates.
The university's expansion plans are set in motion, with the recent launch of the new University Safety and Operations Center and ongoing development of a state-of-the-art Student Achievement Center, which spans 138,400 square feet and is projected to cost $87 million. This facility aims to not only improve student life but also enhance academic support and career development opportunities for attendees.
In response to evolving industry demands, Florida Poly is also expanding its curriculum, introducing new degree programs in aerospace engineering and biomedical sciences. The biomedical program includes an accelerated track to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, facilitated through a partnership with the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM).
Stephenson states, "Our responsibility goes far beyond preparing students for graduation. We are cultivating talent, expertise, and partnerships vital for maintaining Florida's competitiveness in a rapidly transforming world." He adds that as Florida Poly continues its growth trajectory, it is simultaneously opening new avenues for student success and enhancing its contributions to the industries that require highly skilled STEM professionals.
The annual Florida 500 list is a testament to the significant impact of leaders in various fields, marking their dedication to improving Florida's economy and overall quality of life. With leaders like Dr. Stephenson at the forefront, the future looks bright for both Florida Polytechnic University and the region it serves. This recognition not only celebrates individual achievement but also symbolizes the collaborative spirit of an institution that is determined to elevate its students and meet the challenges of the future head-on.
