Experience the Sanno Matsuri: A Cultural Celebration in Tokyo
The Sanno Matsuri, held from June 7 to June 17, 2026, is a breathtaking celebration of Japanese culture, taking place primarily in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo. Esteemed as one of Japan's three major festivals alongside Gion Matsuri in Kyoto and Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, Sanno Matsuri embodies a rich history that dates back over 400 years. This year is particularly special, as it marks the biennial occasion of the
Shinkōsai (神幸祭) or Grand Procession, which showcases a vibrant parade featuring approximately 500 participants dressed in traditional court attire, journeying through the heart of Tokyo.
What to Expect
From the grandeur of the Shinkōsai to various other Shinto rituals and vibrant festivities, the Sanno Matsuri offers a comprehensive exploration of Edo culture. Participants will gather at Hie Shrine in Chiyoda Ward, where the festival's main events will unfold across approximately 23 kilometers through iconic districts such as the Imperial Palace, Marunouchi, Ginza, and Nihonbashi.
Online Resources
To aid in navigating the festival, the
Chiyoda City Tourism Association has launched the
