Okayama University's International Training Program in Laos and Cambodia
In February 2026, Okayama University's Faculty of Economics will embark on an overseas training program in Laos and Cambodia, aimed at providing students with first-hand experiences of significant economic and educational disparities prevalent in both nations.
Insights into Cambodia's Past
During their time in Cambodia, participants will visit crucial historical sites, including the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, learning about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge during the civil war. They will meet with local organizations such as the Shanti Volunteer Association, which highlights the ongoing social and economic disparities rooted in the country’s tumultuous history. A notable visit includes meeting Mr. Chanta, a local artisan who has turned tragic experiences into a mission of hope. Chanta lost his family to the Khmer Rouge and grew up in an orphanage, where he acquired the skill of metalworking. He now transforms spent bullet casings into jewelry, using his work to promote peace and spread awareness about the importance of historical memory. Furthermore, Chanta provides job opportunities to local youth, aiming to prevent the cycle of poverty and promote education.
Contributions from Local Organizations
Additionally, representatives from organizations like Roselle Stones Khmer will discuss their initiatives aimed at supporting underfunded schools in Cambodia. This meeting will provide insights into how local businesses can contribute positively to the community despite economic challenges.
Bridging Disparities in Laos
The training will also extend into Laos, where participants will visit institutions such as the Hackeo School and the Bankun Teacher Training School. Through these visits, students will gain firsthand insight into the notable disparities between urban and rural education systems. Mr. Nui Wanmani Channakhem from Margeon Corporation will share his experiences in bridging these gaps through coffee production and café operations, providing stable income sources to impoverished families and supporting educational opportunities for the youth.
The Role of Education in Career Advancement
Students participating in this program will come to understand that access to higher education does not necessarily guarantee financial success. They will learn the essence of higher education lies not only in obtaining degrees but in the intellectual empowerment it provides. As they witness both the challenges and triumphs faced by their peers in Laos and Cambodia, they will reflect on their roles in creating a society where all children can dream big.
Supporting Initiatives and Overcoming Obstacles
The program will shed light on the reliance of such initiatives on support from overseas entities, including JICA, and how local businesses play a crucial role in bridging education gaps. They will gain an understanding of real-time support efforts, including assistance provided by organizations like the Shanti Volunteer Association to individuals displaced by recent military conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia.
