Experience the New Renaissance Opera "Path of the Habsburg Empire" with Early Instruments

A New Renaissance Opera: "Path of the Habsburg Empire - The Story of Marie and Max"

An extraordinary new performance titled "Path of the Habsburg Empire - The Story of Marie and Max" is set to grace the stage at the Kasumicho Concert Hall in Nishiazabu, Tokyo. Scheduled for August 29 to 31, 2025, this production will brilliantly weave together narration by Kanami Ayano—a celebrated performer known for her work with the Takarazuka Revue—along with live music performed with early instruments.

Set against the backdrop of 15th century Europe, the opera tells the tale of Marie, a daughter of the Duchy of Burgundy, and her husband Maximilian I, known as “the last knight of the Middle Ages.” This compelling narrative explores their romantic relationship that was shaped by both political alliance and profound affection. The performance will bring to life the ideals and aspirations of these historical figures through rich storytelling complemented by the sounds of Renaissance music, performed by the early music ensemble Soffio Armonico.

The ensemble, which specializes in recreating Renaissance music using authentic instruments, will showcase the work of musicians including flutist Ririko Maeda, and lutenist Rene Janis-Fourja. Their participation promises to revive the essence of the Renaissance era, creating a vivid aural experience that merges historical narratives with contemporary artistic expressions.

To enjoy a fully immersive experience, audiences will be treated to a rich tapestry of sounds that includes not only the enchanting melodies of Renaissance flutes but also stunning vocal performances by Maria Mochizuki and Kanami Ayano herself, contributing both narration and song.

The opera is not only an artistic endeavor but a trip through time, presenting a fusion of music, drama, and history. It invites the audience to explore and understand a pivotal moment in European history that led to the creation of one of the most influential dynasties in history. The Habsburg family, starting from their humble origins as local Swiss nobility, rose to power through strategic marriages like that of Marie and Maximilian. Their union was not merely a political maneuver but blossomed into a deep love, laying the foundation for an empire that gained territories in Central and South America and was often referred to as “the empire where the sun never sets.”

The meeting and marriage between Marie and Max signifies a turning point in history, marking the beginning of the Habsburg Empire and the dramatic saga of their descendants who would rule vast lands across Europe. Through this production, audiences will get to witness the love story of Marie and Maximilian, reliving the passion and challenges they faced in a period characterized by upheaval and change.
