International Jazz Day 2026 Culminates in Spectacular Chicago Concert Featuring Star-Studded Lineup

International Jazz Day 2026: A Celebration of Unity and Music

On May 2, 2026, the 15th edition of International Jazz Day reached its pinnacle with a mesmerizing global concert held in the culturally rich city of Chicago. This highly anticipated event featured more than 40 internationally acclaimed artists, performing at the iconic Lyric Opera House. The concert not only celebrated the heritage of jazz but also highlighted the significance of music in bringing people together from all corners of the globe.

The grand concert kicked off with a live, four-part tribute to the host city, showcasing Chicago's vibrant musical legacy. The electrifying duet "The In-Crowd" by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Gregory Porter set the tone, honoring the legendary Chicago jazz artist Ramsey Lewis. Following them, local icon Herbie Hancock performed a reimagined version of his crossover hit "Watermelon Man," blending the Blue Note groove style of the 1960s with his later jazz-funk sound. This tribute to Chicago continued with blues legend Buddy Guy and his protege Christone “Kingfish” Ingram delivering an energetic rendition of the GRAMMY-winning piece "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues".

As the night progressed, the audience was treated to a heartfelt homage to Quincy Jones, whose career was significantly shaped in Chicago. Jacob Collier performed two of Jones' classics, "She's Out of My Life" and "Soul Bossa Nova," captivating the audience with his unique arrangements. The concert also featured a performance of Lizz Wright's "Seems I'm Never Tired of Loving You," accompanied by a soulful choir that added depth to the evening.

Innovative segments followed, including jazz-hip-hop fusion led by Robert Glasper in "Funny Rabbit," which showcased talented artists like Burniss “Boom Bishop” Travis II and DJ Jahi Sundance. Brazilian singer Biá Ferreiro’s vibrant performance of "Antes de Ir" continued to highlight the concert's diversity. Béla Fleck captivated the audience with a dynamic showcase titled "Touch and Go," merging bluegrass, jazz fusion, and classical influences.

Dianne Reeves infused the classic "In a Sentimental Mood" with profound elegance, paying homage to Duke Ellington's memorable composition, leading into Kurt Elling's soulful and swinging interpretation of "Dat Dere," originally composed by Bobby Timmons for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. The concert’s climax was marked by iconic jazz pieces; Gonzalo Rubalcaba led a spirited performance of “Caravan,” followed by a rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime," referencing John Coltrane's groundbreaking interpretation that transformed the piece into a platform for improvisational excellence. Marcus Miller honored his former bandleader Miles Davis with a powerful performance of “Tutu.”

The event wrapped up with the poignant anthem "Imagine" by John Lennon, a heartfelt rallying call for peace that encouraged the audience to stand and celebrate unity through music. This year's International Jazz Day was commemorated in 196 countries, including all 50 states in the U.S., through performances, educational programs, and community service initiatives.

In Chicago, this year’s festivities were co-chaired by Quintin Primo III, Michael Reschke, and Andrew Pritzker, with the substantial support of sponsors such as Capri Capital, GCM Grosvenor, and the MacArthur Foundation. United Airlines, as the global airline partner, played a key role in facilitating travel for artists and educators involved in the celebration.

Established by UNESCO in 2011, International Jazz Day is celebrated on April 30, with the intent of emphasizing jazz's importance and its diplomatic capability of uniting people worldwide. The initiative is led by UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany and acclaimed jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, who serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for intercultural dialogue. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz takes on the primary role of planning and promoting this yearly celebration, which has grown into a global movement reaching over a billion people through various media platforms each year.
