ONT 5K Event at Ontario Airport Raises Over $82,000 for Local USO Supporting Military Families
Ontario International Airport's 5K at the Runway: A Community Effort for Military Support
The annual 5K at the Runway, hosted by Ontario International Airport (ONT), has once again made headlines by raising nearly $83,000 this year in support of the USO (United Service Organizations), reinforcing community ties with military servicemembers and their families. This marked the fourth installment of this vibrant event, which brings together runners, walkers, sponsors, and supporters for a day of fitness, fun, and philanthropy.
Held on February 14 of this year, the event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of over 2,000 individuals. As one of the Inland Empire's standout community events, the 5K provides residents with a unique opportunity to not just engage in physical activity but also support a noble cause close to the hearts of many in the area. The proceeds from the event are dedicated to supporting military families flying into or out of Southern California.
During the event, Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) officials presented a check amounting to $82,918.99 to USO representatives. This substantial contribution reflects the collective effort and compassion of the community and signifies a compelling 54% increase in fundraising compared to the previous year.
OIAA Board President Alan D. Wapner, who also serves on the USO California Advisory Board, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "The success of this event reflects the tremendous appreciation our community has for the men and women who serve our country." His heartfelt words highlight not only the significance of the funds raised but also the community spirit embodied by the runners and spectators who came together for this cause.
The venue, located adjacent to ONT's runways, provides a rare atmosphere for a race, blending elements of aviation with the spirit of fitness and patriotism. Runners could enjoy unique views of the airport facilities while supporting servicemembers throughout the event. The engaging atmosphere and camaraderie among the participants create lasting memories while promoting awareness of the ongoing needs of military families.
The USO at ONT serves military travelers from multiple nearby installations, including Fort Irwin and March Air Reserve Base. Providing year-round access, the USO location offers a comfortable haven for servicemembers and their families to recharge and connect with one another before their travels. Established in 2006, the center has become a pillar of support for military families in need.
"The enthusiasm surrounding this event grows every year," remarks Curt Hagman, OIAA Vice President, underlining the increasing focus on understanding the essential role that the USO plays for military personnel and their families. The support and collaboration from the local community are vital in expanding the program and ensuring that these families feel valued and cared for during their travels.
In addition to raising funds for the USO, the 5K at the Runway promotes healthy lifestyles and strengthens community bonds. Fellow runners, families, and volunteers filled the area with energy and motivation, showcasing the heart of Ontario—a community that deeply cares for its servicemembers and their families.
As Ontario International Airport continues to expand its involvement in community activities, this annual fundraising event stands out not only as a testament to the local dedication towards military support, but it also sets a precedent for future events.
In summary, the 5K at the Runway has solidified its place as a cherished and impactful tradition in the Inland Empire, one that not only promotes health and fitness but also embodies the gratitude and respect that the community holds for the brave individuals who serve in the military. With continued support, next year's event is poised to elevate its impact even further, helping the USO fulfill its crucial mission of providing comfort and care to military families.
