SEMI Foundation Launches National RFP for Regional Nodes
The SEMI Foundation has officially announced the launch of the Regional Node Request For Proposals (RFP). This initiative is part of the National Network for Microelectronics Education (NNME), which is generously supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and aims to boost microelectronics workforce development across the country.
A New Era for Microelectronics
Scheduled for rollout following a successful Letter of Interest (LOI) phase that garnered nearly 300 letters from various organizations nationwide, the RFP signifies a significant step in identifying and enhancing regional ecosystems geared towards microelectronics education and workforce training. This widespread interest reflects a strong nationwide commitment to fostering a skilled semiconductor workforce that is essential for the industry’s future.
According to Michelle Williams, Executive Director at the SEMI Foundation, the NNME represents an unprecedented opportunity to align educational efforts with industry needs within one of the nation’s crucial technology sectors. This RFP process facilitates the selection of up to eight Regional Nodes, each potentially receiving funding of up to $20 million over a five-year period, aimed at establishing a high standard for microelectronics education.
Objectives and Expectations
As part of the program, successful Regional Nodes are expected to:
- - Design and implement training programs that meet industry standards while utilizing the latest technologies.
- - Foster strong partnerships between educational institutions, workforce development agencies, and industry partners to broaden access and create new opportunities.
- - Build effective local workforce pipelines that link education with high-demand careers in the semiconductor sector.
- - Enhance work-based learning opportunities, including internships and apprenticeships, that enable practical, hands-on experiences.
- - Contribute to a shared infrastructure that gives access to industry-standard tools and facilities, promoting advanced learning environments.
- - Lead public outreach initiatives aimed at inspiring future talent and strengthening community engagement in microelectronics.
- - Coordinate existing initiatives across various levels of government and industry to ensure comprehensive national alignment and significant impact.
Each selected Regional Node will function as an innovation hub, leading efforts that integrate both education and industry to create long-lasting and scalable impacts.
Emphasizing Collaboration
Shari Liss, the Vice President of Workforce Development and Initiatives at SEMI and the SEMI Foundation, emphasized the importance of collaboration in enhancing national competitiveness. The hope is that regional ecosystems across the United States will collaborate through this initiative to innovate and drive tangible benefits for both their communities and the semiconductor industry at large.
Informational Webinar
To assist interested applicants, the SEMI Foundation will hold an informational webinar on October 16, 2025, at 3 p.m. ET. This session will provide details about the RFP, eligibility criteria, and the proposal submission process.
