Famima Releases New Ice Bar Featuring Nagano Pear Juice for Hot Summer Days

As summer approaches, one of Japan's favorite convenience stores, Famima, is bringing a new treat to its shelves: the "Torokeru Shokkan Gyutto Nashi" ice bar. Using 60% juice from pears grown in Nagano Prefecture, this frozen delight promises to provide a refreshing escape from the sweltering heat. Priced at 186 yen (incl. tax, 200 yen), this ice bar will be available from August 19, 2025, at about 16,300 Famima stores nationwide.

Over the years, Famima has made it a priority to support sustainable fruit production, and this new ice bar reflects that commitment. Launched in 2023, the "Famimar" fruit ice bar series aims to highlight regional specialties and support local farmers in Japan. After the success of the ice bar last September, which featured the sweetness of Nagano pears, Famima has reintroduced it for an exciting second year, now scheduled for release during the peak summer heat.

The ice bar features a dual-texture design that allows consumers to experience the juicy flavor of pears along with a creamy gelato layer, making it a deliciously indulgent option for a hot day. Each package proudly showcases the "Sanchi to, konbini" logo, along with the “Shiawase Shinshu” logo reflecting a wish to share the happiness sourced from Nagano's unique environment.

To develop this product, Famima's team visited a pear farming operation in Nagano in mid-June, where they observed the innovative techniques farmers use to combat challenges posed by climate change. The rapid rise in temperatures during summer results in sunburned fruit, while warmer winters can accelerate blooming, leaving crops vulnerable to frost damage. Yet, farmers in the region are dedicated to cultivating delicious pears despite these hurdles.

Among the many measures they take are the use of "frost fans" that circulate warm air to protect young flowers from late frosts in spring. They also ensure that sufficient irrigation is maintained during hot periods to support optimal growth. Furthermore, farmers meticulously thin their crops by hand, selecting only the best pears to harvest; a labor-intensive process as any deformed or damaged fruits are distinguished manually, emphasizing the idea of quality over quantity. Historically, pears that do not meet the size criteria become ingredients for processed goods, ensuring minimal waste.

The aging farmer population is a growing concern, and though the new product’s success offers hope, they continue to work on nurturing the next generation of pear growers. Speaking to the team during the tasting, one farmer expressed satisfaction at the balance achieved in this year’s ice bar, claiming it truly had the "melt-in-your-mouth texture" and noting the sweetness was "just right."

For consumers, this is the perfect time to enjoy the succulent taste of Nagano pears, especially when they have been cherished by the very farmers who cultivated them. Famima is committed to fostering relationships with local producers, supporting their efforts through sustainable practices while offering a variety of seasonal products that cater to everyone’s tastes.
