Okayama University's Student-Led Tourism DX Project Shines at Expo 2025
In a remarkable display of creativity and technological innovation, Okayama University has taken a significant step in promoting the region's tourism at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. Scheduled to be held from August 22 to 24, 2025, the expo will feature the Okayama Prefecture's event titled "Okayama 'Momotaro's Summer Vacation'". This initiative is part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's project to enhance regionally focused research universities, known as J-PEAKS, along with the Cabinet Office's Regional Core University Innovation Environment Creation Project.
Working alongside Takahashi City, the university designed an engaging booth that attracted roughly 600 visitors over two days, addressing the challenges posed by the region's declining population through a student-centered Tourism DX initiative. The booth's theme revolved around the majestic Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, playfully inviting participants to "See from Above! The Sky Castle". Leveraging drone technology developed through university research, stunning aerial footage was projected, allowing attendees to experience the thrill of flying above the clouds while seated in the simulation models equipped with VR goggles.
One of the standout features of the exhibition was a 3D metaverse experience co-created by the students and a university startup, which reproduced both the Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and the region's mascot, "Cat Lord Sanjuro," in a virtual environment. This immersive experience allowed visitors of all ages to explore the castle town, drawing enthusiastic responses and delighting everyone, from children to adults. Many attendees praised the visuals, stating comments like, "The footage is breathtaking," and "As someone who has visited the castle, this perspective was completely new and astonishing!" Moreover, individuals with disabilities were also seen enjoying the VR experiences, showcasing the project's goal of creating a society where everyone can enjoy tourism.
The final day of the exhibit culminated in a vibrant performance by the Bitchu Kagura Preservation Association, alongside tourism promotions conducted by the mayor of Takahashi City and the Cat Lord Sanjuro, creating an exciting atmosphere at the venue.
This initiative aims to go beyond mere touristic promotion; it seeks to address regional issues through Tourism DX while contributing to the realization of a well-being society. The participating students engaged critically with the question of how to express the region's charm and transform it into enjoyable experiences for all, gaining practical insights from directly observing visitors' reactions.
The video content and drone models showcased will also be featured at the "Okayama University R&D Showcase 2025," set for December 2, 2025. Additionally, there are plans to screen the content during events tailored to the seasonal cloud sea phenomenon, as well as establishing permanent displays in facilities within Takahashi City. There is a strong expectation that the outcomes from the collaboration between the students and university startups will significantly contribute to enhancing tourism and improving the well-being of local communities.
We look forward to following the ongoing initiatives by Okayama University, a distinctive research institution that embodies the essence of regional cooperation and innovation that makes it a beacon for the future.
