Watch the Rare Slugfish Salamander at Sunshine Aquarium's Science Seminar

Rare Slugfish Salamander Observations at Sunshine Aquarium

In a remarkable turn of events, the Slugfish Salamander, previously believed to be extinct, is now showcased at the Sunshine Aquarium in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district. This unique exhibition is part of the special exhibition, "Midnight Creatures," which runs until November 24. The Slugfish Salamander is one of only two confirmed individuals alive today, a fact that has captured global attention.

The creature will be on display as part of a themed focus on nocturnal animals. Despite being long thought extinct, recent research from Kyoto University revealed that two Slugfish Salamanders, including the one housed at Sunshine Aquarium, are being cared for in Japan. This particular individual has been misidentified and cared for as a Chinese giant salamander for the past 26 years. This special exhibition marks the first time it has been presented to the public as a Slugfish Salamander.

To commemorate the occasion, a dedicated science seminar will be held on August 18, inviting students and amphibian enthusiasts alike to learn about this fascinating species. The seminar will feature Professor Kantaro Nishikawa, a pioneer in salamander research, who discovered the true identity of the aquarium's resident salamander. Attendees will not only observe the Slugfish Salamander up close but will also gain insights into its ecology and conservation from Professor Nishikawa and the aquarium's expert staff.

The seminar is ideal for children in search of summer research inspiration, as they can directly engage with an endangered species and learn about its habitat.

About the Slugfish Salamander

The Slugfish Salamander, a member of the largest amphibian species, has been historically misclassified as a variant of the Chinese giant salamander. They are believed to live for over 60 years in captivity. The Slugfish Salamander’s rediscovery showcases the importance of continued research and conservation efforts, as it was considered extinct in its native range in China.

With this exhibition, visitors can encourage conservation awareness and learn about the delicate ecosystem's challenges these creatures face.

We encourage everyone to participate in this event and learn more about the Slugfish Salamander and the vital role they play in biodiversity. The Sunshine Aquarium's special exhibition not only educates about these magnificent creatures but also contributes to vital conservation efforts.
