Lights Out Boston Anglers Club Dominates Key West Classic to Open 2026 Season

The excitement is palpable as the Lights Out Boston Anglers Club sails into the new year with a remarkable triumph at the Key West Classic, marking their first victory of the 2026 Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) season. This celebration isn't just a mere achievement; it signals the club's dedication to excellence and the hard-fought competition at the forefront of billfishing.

A Winning Performance

The tournament took place over three thrilling days, where five members of the Lights Out Boston team caught six sailfish, accumulating a score of 450 points. This event brought together participants from both the Atlantic and Gulf Divisions, elevating the stakes with promising new teams joining the ranks. For the club, this isn't just about winning; it's about the spirit of competition and the bond that grows stronger through the shared experience of fishing.

Team owner Drew Dolben expressed his excitement about their performance, reflecting on how the offseason kept their momentum going from the previous year. He stated, “The SFC has raised the bar for competitive billfishing. If you want to stay at the front of the pack, you have to treat the offseason like part of the season.” This commitment to preparation set the stage for their success at the Key West Classic.

Offseason Preparation

While most teams might take a breather in the offseason, the Lights Out Boston crew took to the water. Their dedication led them to some of the world's finest fishing spots along the Pacific coast, where they fine-tuned their skills. Last season, they not only excelled in the Atlantic Division with three tournament wins but also made a significant impression in the Zane Grey Championship Playoffs.

Their journey from the Zane Grey Championship in Cabo San Lucas to Costa Rica was not just a fishing trip; it was an opportunity to bond and refine strategies. Captain Rob Carmichael noted, “Quepos is outstanding because you get a lot of sail bites, teaser bites, doubles, triples, quads. That kind of fishing really tightens up a crew.” This relentless pursuit of excellence ensured the team entered the 2026 season more cohesive and prepared than ever before.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Tournaments on the Horizon

The 2026 SFC campaign holds much promise as the league welcomes new teams and modifications designed to enhance competitive integrity and fan engagement. With the addition of clubs like the Rhode Island Breakers and South Florida Sails, the depth of competition is greater than ever. Dolben believes “the league keeps getting better”, and the team's focus remains firmly on their performance in the Atlantic Division schedule.

The upcoming calendar is packed with challenging tournaments:
  • - Key West Classic, Key West, Florida: April 17–19, 2026 — First Place, Atlantic Division
  • - Walker’s Cay Open, Bahamas: May 15–17, 2026
  • - SFC Carrier Cup in Charleston, South Carolina: May 29–31, 2026
  • - Cape Cod Bluewater Classic, Massachusetts: July 17–19, 2026
  • - Rhode Island Offshore Invitational, Newport: July 24–26, 2026
  • - MidAtlantic Championship, Ocean City, Maryland: August 21–23, 2026
  • - Zane Grey Championship Playoffs, Cabo San Lucas: October 17–19, 2026

As the Lights Out Boston team gears up for these events, Carmichael reiterates their strategy: focus on what worked last year while continuing to elevate their performance. With a seasoned crew eager to challenge themselves, they look forward to every kick-off.

Engaging the Community

To further foster their connection with fans, Lights Out Boston plans to organize watch events throughout the season, allowing supporters to join in their journey and celebrate their victories together. Drew Dolben sums it up well, stating, “Last year proved what this team is capable of. Now we’re looking forward to getting back on the tournament trail.”
