Morrisons, one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK, is taking a significant step to enhance the in-store shopping experience for its vast customer base. The retailer has announced the launch of an AI-powered Product Finder, developed in partnership with Google Cloud. This new tool is expected to substantially improve the shopping experience of over ten million customers who visit their stores weekly, particularly during busy shopping times and season changes.

Leveraging advanced AI technologies, including Google Cloud's Gemini models and data analytics platforms such as BigQuery, the Product Finder allows customers to quickly locate products within the store. Shoppers can simply type in a product name to receive instant feedback on the specific aisle and exact location of the item they are looking for.

During its initial rollout, the application demonstrated impressive functionality with 50,000 daily users during the Easter shopping period, highlighting its potential to reduce shopping time and boost customer satisfaction. The Product Finder is designed to be user-friendly, providing shoppers with real-time guidance even when temporary store layouts are employed.

Peter Laflin, Chief Data Officer at Morrisons, elaborated on the technological advancements behind the initiative. He stated, "Having all our data in BigQuery has allowed Morrisons to create new solutions that were previously unattainable. The Product Finder exemplifies how we can harness modern technology to streamline the shopping process for our customers."

The application operates by utilizing Cloud Run functions to efficiently process customer search terms. It then uses genomic models to analyze these queries against Morrisons' extensive product database, identifying the corresponding product codes. This data is promptly sent back to the shopper, ensuring real-time accuracy and enhancing the overall shopping experience.

Mauren Costello, Vice President of Google Cloud, praised the development by emphasizing the ongoing transformation in the retail sector through AI.
