Community Unity: A Fundraising Triumph for Food Insecurity
What started as a modest goal of $25,000 quickly turned into a community-wide triumph as Giv Local and Valhalla Business Advisors pledged a joint effort to combat food insecurity in Centre County, Pennsylvania.
With their collective action, the initial target was exceeded with a remarkable total of $45,000 raised, showcasing the power of community engagement during challenging times.
The Urgent Need for Support
As we head into the holiday season of November 2025, the need for food donations has never been greater. Food insecurity has increased in Centre County, climbing from 11.3% in 2022 to 12.5% in 2023. This increase is attributed to various factors including economic inflation, rising housing costs, and disruptions to social safety nets, which have left many residents vulnerable. With over
650 households currently relying on the State College Food Bank—up from 450 just a few months ago—the need for support is pressing.
Federal assistance has seen fluctuating levels, placing additional strain on households across the region. As the demand rises, organizations like the State College Food Bank are preparing for what could be one of the busiest holiday seasons on record. Sam Buckley, co-founder of Giv Local, emphasizes the importance of proactive community engagement: "
The weeks ahead will be the most challenging our neighbors have faced in a long time. That’s why we’re stepping in early—so Centre County isn't caught off guard."
Making a Lasting Impact
The contributions made by Giv Local and Valhalla, alongside other local partners that include Kish Bank and several anonymous donors, have not only provided immediate financial support but also set the stage for ongoing community engagement. The generous pledge of matching funds has encouraged donors to reach deep into their pockets this holiday season, knowing that their contributions will double the impact.
