Celebrating Excellence: ANSI's 2025 Leadership and Service Award Recipients Announced

On July 30, 2025, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) proudly announced the 20 distinguished recipients of its 2025 Leadership and Service Awards. This prestigious acknowledgment is given to professionals who have made substantial contributions to both national and international standardization activities while demonstrating a continued commitment to their industry and the enhancement of the global voluntary consensus standards system. Awardees will be honored during the ANSI Leadership and Service Awards Ceremony, which will take place as part of the ANSI Innovation Summit (formerly known as World Standards Week) on October 22 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel Conference Center in Rockville, Maryland.

Among the honorees, several notable individuals stand out due to their significant achievements:

Chairman's Award


Andrew Updegrove of Gesmer Updegrove, LLP will be awarded the prestigious Chairman's Award, celebrating exemplary accomplishments in support of ANSI or the ANSI Federation. Mr. Updegrove is recognized for his advocacy for the U.S. private-sector-led standardization system, fostering collaboration among various standards-setting organizations, thus enhancing the U.S. standardization community.

Astin-Polk International Standards Medal


Clare Allocca of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will receive the Astin-Polk International Standards Medal, which honors exceptional service in furthering trade and understanding among nations through the promotion of international standardization practices, measurements, or certification.

Edward Lohse Information Technology Medal


Wael Diab of Futurewei is the honoree of the Edward Lohse Information Technology Medal for his exemplary efforts in fostering cooperation among entities engaged in global IT standardization initiatives.

Elihu Thomson Electrotechnology Medal


Hae Choe from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is awarded the Elihu Thomson Electrotechnology Medal, which honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of electrotechnology standardization at both national and international levels.

Finegan Standards Medal


The Finegan Standards Medal will be awarded to Ritesh Ghimire from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), recognizing his exceptional leadership in the development and application of voluntary standards.

George S. Wham Leadership Medal


Peter Pondillo of Corning Incorporated will receive the George S. Wham Leadership Medal, honoring his outstanding contributions that have provided strategic direction and commitment to the national and international standards system.

Gerald H. Ritterbusch Conformity Assessment Medal


Jonathan Colby of Streamwise Development will receive this medal, which recognizes distinguished service in promoting understanding and utilization of conformity assessment methods that provide confidence in standards compliance across markets.

Howard Coonley Medal


This medal, recognizing an executive who has significantly contributed to the national economy through voluntary standardization, will be granted to Don Mays of Product Safety Insights.

Maureen Breitenberg Conformity Assessment Research Medal


Jeroen Van Dam from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will be honored for his advancements in conformity assessment principles as outlined in the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA).

Stephen Crawford Workforce Development and Innovation Medal


As part of recognizing significant impacts in workforce development within the U.S., Casey Marks from ISC2 will receive this award dedicated to accredited bodies or individuals contributing positively to workforce initiatives.

Additionally, Meritorious Service Awards will be presented to seven individuals who have shown outstanding service in support of ANSI’s objectives, namely:
  • - Christopher Carnahan (Aerospace Industries Association, AIA)
  • - Marc Deshusses (Duke University)
  • - Laura Donohoe (Electronic Components Industry Association, ECIA)
  • - Mike Leibowitz (NEMA)
  • - Alan Manche (Schneider Electric)
  • - Thor Petersen (Office of the United States Trade Representative, USTR)
  • - Wallie Zoller (Rockwell Automation)

Moreover, Next Generation Awards will be presented to three professionals engaged in standardization or conformity assessment activities for under eight years and who have shown exceptional leadership and vision:
  • - Caitlyn Clark (Xcel Energy)
  • - Thomas Conley (U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration)
  • - Ashleigh McNaboe (Boston Scientific)
