Segway's Sustainable Mobility Innovations Earn HKQAA Recognition for Eco-Friendly Solutions

Segway Receives HKQAA Award for Sustainable Innovations

Segway, a leader in mobility solutions, has been recognized for its ongoing efforts in sustainable product development by receiving the Green and Sustainable Innovation and Technology Contribution Award from the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA). This prestigious award was presented at the HKQAA Green and Livable City Innovation Technology Forum, held on December 17, 2025, at the Hong Kong Science Park.

This accolade highlights Segway's dedicated approach to sustainability, especially as seen in its electric shared scooter models, the Apex D110 and Max S90L. In recent years, the company has committed to increasing its sustainability initiatives, launching eco-friendly products, establishing responsible supply chains, and harnessing clean energy. These efforts aim to meet the growing demands of cities, operators, and end-users for cleaner and more transparent mobility options worldwide.

Commitment to Ecological Design

Segway has woven sustainability into the fabric of its product design and production long before industry standards accelerated. The S90L model was one of the first in the industry to undergo a lifecycle assessment (LCA), and three additional Segway vehicles, including the D110, have also received LCA recognition—an internationally recognized method for evaluating a product's total environmental impact from raw materials to end-of-life, aligning the company’s sustainability commitments with global standards and traceable environmental measures.

The proactive adoption of recycled materials by Segway signifies tangible sustainable progress. Since 2021, Segway has been pioneering the integration of recycled materials in its shared electric scooters, a commitment illustrated in specific models. The Apex D110, Max Plus X, and Max S90L scooters now contain recycled materials in percentages of approximately 36.5%, 31.84%, and 30.16% respectively (excluding batteries) as of 2025. With these models deployed globally, Segway demonstrates that sustainable design is not only ready for certification but has also proven its market viability with excellence in both environmental and operational capacities.

Green Production Fueled by Sustainable Energy

At the production facility, Segway's solar energy system is operational, providing clean energy for on-site consumption and surplus to the grid. After a year of steady growth in its renewable electricity share, over 65% of the facility's electricity was sourced from green initiatives between June and August 2025. This initiative goes beyond powering Segway's own production; the surplus clean electricity directly benefits the local community. By injecting excess energy into the regional grid, Segway contributes measurably to environmental goals, quantified by green energy certificates (GEC)—one certificate represents 1,000 kWh supplied. A total of 143 GECs were generated between June and December.

Zack Yan, the Deputy General Manager of Segway's Commercial Mobility Division, stated, "Integrating green energy into our production processes and reinjecting surplus energy into the national grid not only validates our environmental responsibility but also reflects the important role shared micromobility plays in the bigger picture. By powering the national grid with clean energy, we are supporting the country's energy transition, demonstrating that micromobility is more than just a means of transport; it is a concrete building block for smart, low-carbon cities, aligned with both national and international goals."

Creating a Sustainable Supply Chain Ecosystem

Sustainability in production is rarely achieved in isolation; it requires a fully integrated and environmentally friendly supply chain. For Segway, integrating eco-friendly principles starts right from the initial stages of production, aligning every supply chain partner towards common sustainability objectives. One of the initiatives supporting this collaboration is the company’s annual supply chain convention, where Segway and its partners engage in sustainable innovation and improving product efficiencies at all levels.

Beyond the annual convention, Segway has established a robust supply chain management and evaluation system to enhance requirements placed on supply chain partners. A key element of this system is an integrated sustainability incentive mechanism within the annual supplier audit process, designed to motivate partners to deepen their efforts and innovations across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions.

With the HKQAA award serving as a new validation of its efforts, Segway is redoubling its commitment to leading the industry towards a cleaner, responsible future. By marrying sustainable design with clean energy production and a deeply committed supplier ecosystem, the company demonstrates that low-carbon mobility is scalable, reliable, and ready for global deployment. Segway will continue to push the boundaries of what sustainable micromobility can achieve.
