Zambia and Huawei Collaborate to Launch Global Smart Village at MWC 2025

Zambia Collaborates with Huawei for Global Smart Village

The Ministry of Science and Technology of Zambia, in partnership with Huawei, recently launched a global Smart Village showcase at the MWC Barcelona 2025 congress. This significant event highlights new digital transformation opportunities for local communities and aims to accelerate Zambia’s digitalization strategy.

Over 200 leaders from various sectors and technical experts in public services gathered to discuss the potential of national transformation supported by digital technologies. The global Smart Village exemplifies how innovative approaches to public service can enhance community living standards and drive economic growth.

The equipment for the first Smart Village in Zambia was successfully delivered following 30 days of construction in July 2024. This project aims to provide the community with electricity and internet access, along with telemedicine services and remote learning facilities.

Li Junfeng, Huawei's Vice President and CEO of the Global Public Sector Business Unit, emphasized the necessity of digital transformation for governments to strengthen national capacities and improve citizens' well-being. According to him, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial driving force behind this transformation, and the extensive use of the DeepSeek model signifies a landmark change in production dynamics.

During the forum, Koh Hong-Eng, Huawei’s Global Chief Public Services Industry Scientist, urged attendees to engage in discussions regarding national digital transformation. Felix C. Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, shared that the Smart Village initiative aligns perfectly with the country's vision for Zambian development by 2030.

He explained, “Through smart education, we are not only imparting knowledge to the next generation but also equipping them with the digital skills necessary to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” This digital transformation effort in Zambia focuses on more than just technology; it encapsulates the essence of empowering people and fostering potential within communities.

It aims to bridge inequalities and create a future where every Zambian citizen can contribute meaningfully to national development. Huawei adheres to its mission of “Accelerating Government Intelligence and Public Services, Collaboratively Building a Cognitive Society” and continuously broadens its business scenarios. The company actively promotes digital technology adoption to achieve a vision of “excellent governance, improved livelihoods, and a thriving economy.”

In conclusion, the collaboration between Zambia's government and Huawei at MWC 2025 sets a powerful example for other countries looking to leverage technology for community improvement. This initiative not only stands to uplift Zambian communities but also provides a scalable model that can be adopted globally, ensuring that technology serves as a bridge to a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
