Innovative Fluoro Sorb Technology Aims to Address PFAS Treatment in Japan

Suido Kiko's Groundbreaking Approach to PFAS Treatment

Suido Kiko Co., Ltd. is at the forefront of tackling the persistent issue of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination in Japan's water systems. With the 2025 Hiroshima Water Expo just around the corner, the company is set to showcase its innovative mineral-based adsorbent, Fluoro Sorb. Aiming for a substantial entry into the Japanese water industry, this technology promises to revolutionize how we manage water purification processes, especially concerning deadly contaminants that are proving increasingly difficult to remove.

Understanding the PFAS Challenge

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals widely used in everyday items, such as raincoats and cooking utensils, due to their water- and grease-resistant properties. However, these substances do not break down easily in the environment, leading to significant pollution concerns. The most notorious among them are PFOS and PFOA, which are set to be regulated under stricter water quality standards starting from fiscal year 2026 in Japan. Given these circumstances, water utilities are in urgent need of effective solutions to ensure safe drinking water.

Introducing Fluoro Sorb: An Effective Solution

What sets Fluoro Sorb apart in the treatment of PFAS is its unique ability to operate effectively even amidst various contaminants present in water. Unlike existing PFAS treatment methods, such as ion-exchange resins and activated carbon adsorbents, Fluoro Sorb demonstrates superior adsorption properties. This mineral-based adsorbent efficiently targets PFAS without interference from other substances, showcasing high removal rates and lower replacement frequency due to its large adsorption capacity.

Designed to be cost-efficient, Fluoro Sorb's material offers not only economic advantages in procurement, manufacturing, and disposal but also longevity and affordability. It has already seen successful applications in North America and Europe, confirming its effectiveness in real-world conditions – a promising sign for its future in Japan.

Demonstrating Fluoro Sorb at the 2025 Hiroshima Water Expo

The upcoming Hiroshima Water Expo will be the perfect platform to highlight not only the Fluoro Sorb technology but also several other groundbreaking water treatment innovations developed by Suido Kiko. Attendees can look forward to viewing the hybrid sedimentation tank designed for high turbidity situations, the self-adjusting valve, and emergency water purification devices. Alongside these presentations, the company will also share insights into its disaster support initiatives and the work of its emergency water assistance team, EWAT.

Research Backing Fluoro Sorb's Effectiveness

In-depth pre-tests evaluating Fluoro Sorb against other adsorbents demonstrated its durability and performance. Comparative studies using equilibrium adsorption tests and rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCT) revealed that while ion-exchange resins showed high basic adsorption capabilities, Fluoro Sorb outperformed the competition in more complex water quality conditions. Notably, both Fluoro Sorb and ion-exchange resins exhibited similar lifespans when it came to PFOS removal, while Fluoro Sorb took the lead in longevity for PFOA. Such results strongly indicate that this new adsorbent could very well enhance treatment facilities' overall effectiveness.

Details on the 2025 Hiroshima Water Expo

Scheduled for October 29-31, 2025, at the Hiroshima Gate Park in Hiroshima City, this expo serves as Japan's largest exhibition focused on water-related technologies. It is organized by the Japan Water Industry Association, featuring over 150 participating companies showcasing the latest advancements and services aimed at the continuous development of water utilities.

Whether you’re a professional in the water sector or simply interested in innovative solutions to contemporary problems, this exhibition promises significant insights into the future of water treatment technology in Japan.
