WorldSkills USA Team Triumphs in Shanghai

The 2026 WorldSkills USA Team recently demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication at the 48th WorldSkills Competition held in Shanghai, recognized globally as the 'Olympics of skilled trades.' This elite team, composed of nine young professionals, was proud to represent the United States on the international stage from September 22 to 27.

Among these talented individuals was Mikala Sposito, a 21-year-old welding champion from Michigan, who earned a bronze medal in the tough Welding category. Mikala's journey to this competition included countless hours of training at Washtenaw Community College. Her standout achievement is particularly notable as she is the first female to represent the U.S. in this category. Chelle Travis, Executive Director of SkillsUSA, praised her dedication and technical prowess, stating that Mikala embodies the pinnacle of American skilled talent.

In addition to Mikala's success, two other competitors garnered the Medal for Excellence for their remarkable performances. Elizabeth Brown, a 22-year-old from Missouri, showcased her culinary expertise and creativity, achieving distinction among 18 competitors. Supported by major sponsors such as Unilever and ZWILLING, Elizabeth's hard work demonstrated the top-tier standards expected at WorldSkills. Similarly, Charles Goede, who is just 20 years old from Connecticut, exhibited his exceptional capabilities in Plumbing and Heating, earning the same accolade for his mastery over complex technical procedures.

The WorldSkills USA Team also included other accomplished members:

• - James Cahill, 20, from Missouri, specializing in Automobile Technology; his mechanical diagnostics skills are outstanding.
• - Tristan Coates, 22, from Florida, a seasoned business owner representing Carpentry, bringing rich craft knowledge.
• - Alexis Squyres, 21, from Pennsylvania, a CNC Milling expert and bronze medalist, being the first female representative in her field.
• - Benjamin Strupp, 21, from Wisconsin, known for his diagnostic skills in heavy machinery.
• - Evan Chow and James (Jack) Sutherland, both 24, from Tennessee, showcased their collaboration and innovation in the intensive Mechatronics industry.

Evan and Jack were honored as the 'Best of Nation', a recognition awarded to competitors excelling in teamwork and skill.

The WorldSkills Competition serves as the premier global platform for showcasing skilled labor, featuring about 1,400 competitors from 73 countries across 64 different skill areas. This year added several emerging skills, highlighting the evolving nature of vocational training.

To ensure the team was primed for their performance in Shanghai, each member was supported through training coordinated by industry partners and skilled experts. These training sessions were held both virtually and in-person across various locations, ensuring that competitors met high international standards. Expert coaches included specialists in fields ranging from Automobile Technology to Welding, contributing to the comprehensive preparation.

The event, made possible by support from prominent partners like 3M, American Welding Society, and DEWALT, emphasizes the importance of industry collaboration in developing the next generation of skilled workers.
