Royal Canadian Mint Celebrates Black History Month with New Coin Honoring Hogan's Alley

Royal Canadian Mint Commemorates Hogan's Alley

As Black History Month unfolds across Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint is making a significant tribute to Hogan's Alley, a Black community that flourished in Vancouver's Strathcona area until the 1970s. This area was pivotal for Black residents in Vancouver, beginning with their settlement in 1858. Once home to numerous families, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, Hogan's Alley was bustling with life and culture, showcasing small businesses and lively entertainment venues.

However, the area faced challenges due to unfair city planning which ultimately led to its demolition for a road viaduct project. Today, with emerging community leaders revitalizing this essential part of Vancouver's history, the Mint has introduced the 2025 Fine Silver Commemorating Black History coin. This coin stands as a powerful reminder of Hogan's Alley’s enduring spirit and is set to be released on February 4, 2025.

Djaka Blais, Executive Director of Hogan's Alley Society, expressed, "As we work towards recreating a hub for Black communities in Metro Vancouver, it is essential to acknowledge the historic Black presence and contributions that shaped our city. This commemorative coin serves as a significant recognition of Hogan's Alley’s past, inspiring ongoing efforts to honor its legacy."

The Mint’s president, Marie Lemay, remarked on the importance of embedding stories of Canada's diverse heritage into their products, underlining their commitment to celebrating Black History Month with this commemorative coin.

The coin's reverse, crafted by artist Kwame Delfish, illustrates the vibrant essence of Hogan's Alley. At the center lies the Pacific Dogwood, British Columbia's provincial flower, surrounded by images representing the community's legacy: an owner of a famous chicken house, a Black porters from the railway, and performers including singers and dancers reflecting the artistic spirit of the neighborhood that thrived in local nightclubs.

Kwame Delfish shared his feelings on the project, stating, "This coin pays homage to the vibrant community of Hogan's Alley. Despite the difficulties faced by Black Canadians in this neighborhood, it encapsulates a broader narrative. As an Afro-Caribbean designer, it was imperative to embed this piece in the community's entrepreneurial spirit and vast culture. The residents cultivated a sense of identity, solidarity, and pride that stands even today. Although Hogan's Alley was short-lived, its history deserves celebration, and I hope to have captured the essence of this community through my work."

The 2025 $20 Fine Silver Coin is limited to a mintage of just 5,000 pieces, retailing at $119.95. Collectors and interested individuals can order this unique item by reaching out to the Mint or visiting various retail outlets including Canada Post locations.
