Celebrate the Special Day of Chōyō

On September 9, 2025, a unique event will take place at Karuizawa Onza Bar, hosted by the Shimada Group, centered around the traditional Japanese festival of Chōyō. This special day, also known as the Chrysanthemum Festival, is significant for wishing longevity and good health.

At this event, guests can experience the traditional “Kiku Sake” where sake is adorned with chrysanthemum petals. This tradition blends beautifully with a special menu inspired by the season, featuring dishes made with chrysanthemum, chestnut, and eggplant, all expertly paired with a selection of fine sake from Yoshikawa Brewery.

As part of the festivities, Yuko Ishino, a knowledgeable sake brewer and member of the Yokohama Chrysanthemum Association, will join us as a guest speaker. She will share her insights about sake-making and will discuss the art of pairing food and beverages while also demonstrating Ikebana with chrysanthemums.

The Chōyō celebration offers not just a tasting experience but also a chance to foster community ties through communication with sake makers and exclusive event-only sake offerings. Join us at Karuizawa Onza Bar as we create new moments of delight during this lovely season.

About Yoshikawa Brewery

Founded in the first year of the Taisho era (1912), Yoshikawa Brewery is situated at the foot of Tanazawa, a mountain known for its rainfall. The brewery has received numerous awards both domestically and internationally, including the Kura Master in France. Their motto “Sake for life’s Sake” reflects their commitment to creating sake that enriches life’s moments.

All the water used in their sake is sourced from wells, emphasizing the belief that “water is a gift” in sakemaking. The brewery uses hard water, rarely found in Japan, to craft their signature sake, which is characterized by a low rice polishing ratio and lower alcohol content.
