Volvo Trucks Introduces Innovative 80-Tonne Electric Truck With Extended Range

Volvo Trucks Unveils New 80-Tonne Electric Truck

Volvo Trucks continues to elevate industry standards by unveiling a groundbreaking electric truck capable of hauling up to 80 tonnes. With an extended range specially designed for demanding transport tasks, this new model aims to seamlessly combine performance with sustainability.

The latest electric truck marks another step forward following Volvo's recent roll-out of advanced electric models. This purpose-built vehicle is designed specifically for combinations of truck and trailer, achieving high payload capacity while maximizing driving range. Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, expressed pride in creating another zero-emission solution tailored for heavy workloads and long distances, noting, "we believe many customers will be interested in this new truck."

Features and Performance

The innovative electric truck supports high-capacity transport operations, designed for markets requiring higher weight limits than the European average. For instance, under typical loads of 64 tonnes, the truck can travel around 450 kilometers on a single charge. In regions like Sweden and Finland, where higher total weights of 74 and 76 tonnes respectively are permitted, the range still stands impressive at 420 kilometers.

Sales for this model will initially target markets in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, with deliveries expected to commence in early 2027. Hjelmgren emphasized the economic and environmental benefits, stating, "High total weights in truck transport lower both transport costs and environmental impact. By electrifying these transports, we are advancing toward more sustainable logistics."

The truck is built on the same versatile powertrain architecture as the new generation of Volvo's FH, FM, and FMX electric trucks, launched in April 2026. This ensures exceptional driving dynamics and smooth shifting, enhancing the overall driving experience. For charging, the truck supports both the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and CCS2, allowing quick charging times of approximately 36 minutes to reach 80% capacity using MCS.

Another noteworthy feature is the improved battery life, providing 640 kWh of usable energy. Updated battery monitoring and enhanced insulation demonstrate Volvo's commitment to optimizing performance in colder climates, enabling more efficient operation and energy retention.

Additionally, this model introduces hub-reduction axles, improving ground clearance and startability. This is particularly beneficial for demanding applications like on-road timber transport or construction tasks, along with an enhanced capacity for traversing well-maintained roads.

Sustainability and Innovation

As the automotive industry continues to grapple with the environmental impacts of traditional fuel-based operations, Volvo's strategic pivot towards electric solutions plays a crucial role in steering towards a greener future. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints while meeting rising logistical demands.

Overall, the Volvo FH Electric truck signifies a notable leap not only for the company but for the transport industry as a whole, merging heavy-duty capabilities with zero-emission technology. As the world pushes for decarbonization in all sectors, innovations like these pave the way for an eco-friendlier transport landscape.

At Volvo Trucks, the integration of electric vehicles into mainstream transport solutions reflects a steadfast commitment to quality, safety, and environmental stewardship. By continuously investing in electric technologies, the company is setting the stage for a sustainable transportation future that meets both industry needs and environmental responsibilities.
