Explore the Depths of Marine Life: Matt Draper's Unmissable Exhibition at Leica Gallery New York
Exploring the Depths of Marine Life: Matt Draper’s Solo Exhibition at Leica Gallery New York
Leica Gallery New York is excited to announce the opening of 'Within One Breath,' a solo exhibition by renowned artist and industrial designer, Matt Draper. Launching on November 6, 2025, and running until January 11, 2026, this exhibition showcases Draper’s evocative black-and-white underwater photography, expertly capturing the serene and often unseen beauty of marine life.
A Masterful Perspective on Marine Life
Draper’s unique body of work is noteworthy for being entirely created on a single breath while freediving. This technique allows Draper to maintain minimal disturbance to the underwater world, preserving its integrity in the images he produces. His monochromatic photographs unveil profound interactions between human and marine life, showcasing moments rarely seen by human eyes. Draper's artistic vision reveals the emotional depth of the aquatic realm, blending artistry, patience, and an intimate understanding of the ocean's environment.
A Decade of Dedication
Over the past ten years, Draper has dedicated nearly 1,000 days documenting the intricate annual migration of humpback whales across the Pacific Islands. With a keen eye, he has captured crucial footage of behaviors that have never been recorded before. One of his notable pieces, entitled 'Bow,' was chosen to be featured on the UNESCO Memory Disc—a time capsule designed to carry humanity's cultural heritage to the Moon. This splendid photograph shares the honor of being preserved in lunar history alongside iconic pieces such as 'The Mona Lisa' and 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa.'
A Celebration of Craftsmanship and Innovation
Mike Giannattasio, President of Leica Camera US, aptly described Draper’s work as a testament to the values of Leica: a commitment to enduring craftsmanship and unwavering patience. Draper's integration of the Leica rangefinder in his underwater practice stands testament to his pursuit of perfection in capturing marine life. He founded SUB13, a design company that specializes in engineering underwater housings that are compatible with Leica cameras, merging functional art with high-end photography.
Exclusive Exhibition Events
To honor this collaboration, Draper and SUB13 will unveil a one-of-a-kind underwater housing for a Leica camera during the exhibition's opening reception. This unique piece will join the permanent collection of the Leica Store Gallery New York in Meatpacking District, symbolizing the bond between the artist and the brand.
The opening reception promises to be a memorable evening, taking place on November 6, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Following the exhibition’s closure, an intimate walk-through led by Draper along with the Leica Gallery Director, Michael Foley, will be held on January 8, 2026, at 6:30 PM. This event will afford guests the opportunity to gain insight into Draper's artistic process and the select works on display.
