The Goten-yama Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
From March 27 to April 5, 2026, the stunning Goten-yama Trust City in Shinagawa will host the Goten-yama Cherry Blossom Festival, just a ten-minute walk from Shinagawa Station. With this year’s theme, “#Edo Retro,” the festival aims to bring the Edo culture to life amidst the beautiful cherry blossoms.
A Blossoming Promise: 1,000 Lanterns Path
Among the highlights of this year’s festival is a magical installation titled “The Path of 1,000 Lanterns,” featuring 1,000 handmade lanterns crafted by local elementary school students. These lanterns symbolize their wish for a continued vibrant cherry blossom landscape in Goten-yama, lighting up the spring nights with their cheerful glow.
Goten-yama itself has a rich history dating back to the Edo period, where the eighth shogun, Yoshimune Tokugawa, promoted cherry blossom viewing among the Edo citizens. This practice led to the planting of numerous cherry trees, establishing Goten-yama as a renowned cherry blossom spot. Now, amidst urban redevelopment around Shinagawa Station, Goten-yama Trust City continues to thrive with its lush greenery, cherished by locals as a peaceful retreat.
During the festival, visitors can expect a variety of unique experiences, including the sale of exclusive cherry blossom-themed drinks and traditional craft workshops that allow attendees to immerse themselves in the essence of Edo culture.
Experience the Flavor of Edo
The festival will also introduce original cherry blossom drinks, inspired by the traditional Edo hanami culture. Visitors can create their own drinks using three types of exclusive wellness syrup from the Goten-yama area, served in traditional tokkuri (sake flasks) and kyūsu (teapots).
Two delectable options are:
- - Cherry Blossom Sangria: A refreshing blend of red wine with mixed fruit syrups featuring strawberries and raspberries, topped with cherry blossom essence.
- - Cherry Blossom Soda: A non-alcoholic option, perfect for family-friendly enjoyment!
Additionally, special citrus cocktails will be available, made using various citrus fruits, offering a bright and fresh taste of spring.
Engage with Tradition
Beyond food and drink, the festival offers a chance to engage with traditional crafts. Guests can participate in workshops focused on Edo kiriko (cut glass), coloring Buddha statues, and binding Japanese-style books, all of which reflect the craftsmanship associated with the Edo period. Furthermore, vibrant live painting performances of ukiyo-e (floating world pictures) by talented art students will provide an artistic backdrop to the festival.
