Exploring Japan’s Rice Culture: A Unique Event

The Plenus Corporation, known for its array of restaurants such as "Hotto Motto" and "Yayoiken," is committed to preserving and promoting the rich legacy of Japan's rice culture. With its headquarters located in the heart of Tokyo's Ginza district, Plenus operates over 2,810 stores across the country. As part of its initiative called "Komeiku," aimed at inheriting the charms of Japanese rice culinary traditions for future generations, Plenus will host a special event on November 24, featuring a giant art piece and a rice tasting experience.

Event Details

The event will take place at the Plenus office in Kayabacho, located in Chuo, Tokyo, and entry is free. Attendees can look forward to two sessions throughout the day:
  • - Morning Session: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM (Registration starts at 10:00 AM)
  • - Afternoon Session: 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM (Registration starts at 2:00 PM)

During the event, every visitor who completes a feedback questionnaire will receive a complimentary sample of "Kiname Rice" from Hotto Motto.

Understanding Terraced Rice Fields

The first part of the event aims to deepen participants' understanding of terraced rice fields, known as "Tanada." Attendees will learn about the significance, allure, and current preservation efforts surrounding these scenic landscapes.

The Art of Seasons in Tanada

One of the highlights of the event will be the exhibition of “The Seasons of Tanada,” a breathtaking 8-meter tall mural created by Morihiro Hosokawa. The mural depicts the beauty of Japan’s terraced rice fields through spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Positioned in the atrium spanning the 7th and 8th floors of the Plenus office, this artwork provides a captivating view of the terraced fields from both floors, while a supplementary video showcasing Hosokawa's creative process will be available for viewing.

About Morihiro Hosokawa

Morihiro Hosokawa was born in 1938 in Tokyo and has had a distinguished career as a journalist, politician, and artist. His political tenure includes serving as a member of both houses of parliament, governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, and Prime Minister of Japan. After retiring from politics, he ventured into various forms of artistic expression including pottery, calligraphy, ink painting, and oil painting, with exhibitions planned into 2025.

Rice Tasting Experience

For food enthusiasts, the event will also feature a tasting session of four distinct rice varieties. Participants will have the opportunity to savor the unique flavors and characteristics of each rice type, enhancing their appreciation for Japan's staple food.

How to Participate

Spaces for the event are limited to 30 participants per session; thus, early registration is encouraged. Interested individuals can sign up through the official event page at this link. Registration will close once the capacity is reached or by November 23.
