Exploring the Continuity and Discontinuity of Reality in Yusuke Shigeta's Solo Exhibit

Exhibition: Continuous and Discontinuous of Migiwa by Yusuke Shigeta

Location: Otherwise Gallery, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Dates: June 19, 2026 - July 25, 2026
Opening Reception: June 19, 2026, 18:00-20:00

The Otherwise Gallery, located along Kotto-dori Street in Omotesando, will host a solo exhibition by media artist Yusuke Shigeta from June 19 to July 25, 2026. Titled Continuous and Discontinuous of Migiwa, the exhibition explores the intersection of materiality and temporality within digital expressions, a theme that has captivated Shigeta's creative pursuits in recent years.

Shigeta delves into the complex relationships between matter and information, image and symbol, time and computation through a new body of work. His artistic vision examines the boundaries between a continuous reality and fragmented information—highlighting how our lived experience of the world is often divided into discrete, manageable units of data.

In this exhibition, Shigeta focuses on the term migiwa, which translates to the shoreline—a border where land meets water. The shoreline is not a fixed boundary; it is a dynamic space that transforms with the ebb and flow of the tides. Shigeta interprets this notion as a metaphor for the meeting point of continuous realities and discontinuous information. Within the gallery, attendees can expect to encounter installations that challenge conventional perceptions of video and animation. Shigeta's previous explorations into the principles of early animation devices like phenakistoscopes and zoetropes have led him to view visual experiences not just as occurrences on a screen, but phenomena that can be体験ed physically through the body, promoting a deeper engagement with his work.

Through immersive installations, Shigeta will present how digital technologies fragment our world into pieces while simultaneously fostering new connections and instances of spontaneity among those fragments. The exhibition aims to provoke reflections on how we perceive and comprehend the world around us, questioning the nature of our understanding in a digitized age.

Commentary by Yusuke Shigeta

“I perceive the world as an infinitely continuous entity, containing boundless richness within its endless connections. On the other hand, information appears in non-continuous fragments. These fragments are manageable and invite various manipulations and exchanges, often leading to unexpected connections. My focus lies at the site where continuity and discontinuity intersect—bridging continuous landscapes with non-continuous phenomena, embodying our existence through this reciprocal motion.”

In addition to the captivating visuals, attendees can engage directly with Shigeta on specific days throughout the exhibition. He will be present on June 19, June 20, July 4, July 11, and July 18, providing insight into his creative process. The exhibition is supported by the PIXEL, further elevating the exploration of digital media within contemporary art.
