beME Research Reveals Alarming Trends in Unauthorized Image and Video Sharing

New Insights from beME on Image and Video Unauthorized Sharing

RightsTech Inc., based in Tokyo, has recently unveiled significant research conducted via its AI-powered online damage prevention platform, beME. This study looked into unauthorized sharing of images and videos in Japan and North America, revealing common challenges faced across borders, particularly among younger generations.

Key Findings from Japan

The survey conducted in Japan targeted individuals aged 18 to 28. The results showed that about 70.7% have shared photos or videos via social media or messaging platforms at least once. However, concerningly, 24.6% reported experiencing unauthorized posting of their shared content. When considering the anxiety associated with such experiences, nearly 46% of respondents revealed they are aware of the potential risks of unauthorized posts.

Insights from North America

In North America, the findings were even more striking. Approximately 57.3% of participants reported that their photos or videos were shared without their consent. Furthermore, 64% expressed interest in utilizing online detection and alert services to prevent such occurrences, with 70% stating they would be willing to pay for these services. Notably, heavy users of video-centric platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube showed higher rates of experiencing unauthorized sharing and expressed a greater need for protective measures.

A Growing Global Challenge

The data from both Japan and North America indicate that as image and video sharing becomes more normalized, the risks associated with unauthorized posting, impersonation, and deepfake technology are expanding globally. This highlights an urgent necessity for preventative measures and systems to combat digital harm.

Overview of the Research

  • - Japan Study: Target Group: Japanese youth aged 18-28, Method: Internet survey, Period: August 2025, Valid Responses: 346 individuals.
  • - North America Study: Target Group: Youth aged 18-28 in the US and Canada, Method: Internet survey, Period: October 2025, Valid Responses: 250 individuals.

Addressing Digital Harm

RightsTech Inc. emphasizes the troubling reality that an estimated 3 million people globally have experienced digital sexual harm or defamation. Alarmingly, 90% of these victims remain silent, unable to voice their experiences. Just a tiny fraction, around 10%, has managed to access the necessary support from qualified professionals. Even more concerning, 70% of victims lack adequate proof required to pursue legal action, complicating their ability to seek justice.
