Gallup-McKinley County Schools Unveils New Equity Council to Enhance Student Achievement

Gallup-McKinley County Schools Constructs New Pathway for Student Engagement with Equity Council

On May 26, 2026, Gallup-McKinley County Schools (GMCS) took a significant step towards enhancing educational opportunities for all its students by establishing an Equity Council. This innovative initiative aims to integrate community perspectives into school district decision-making, ensuring that students, especially those historically facing obstacles, receive the support they need to thrive.

Interim Superintendent Jvanna Hanks emphasized the importance of the Equity Council, stating, "Establishing our Equity Council is not just a policy step, it is a statement of our values." This council is intended to create an environment where every student, parent, guardian, and staff member feels a sense of belonging. By welcoming diverse voices, GMCS hopes to foster a collaborative atmosphere in its educational system.

Objectives of the Equity Council

The newly founded council’s main objectives include:
  • - Incorporating Diverse Perspectives: The council will act as an advisory group that brings together community members from various backgrounds, including economically disadvantaged families, Native American students, English learners, and students with disabilities. Their input will guide district leadership in shaping policies and programs that promote equity and inclusion.
  • - Feedback on Policies: The Equity Council will provide essential feedback to district leaders regarding policies relevant to inclusion and fairness, ensuring that every voice is heard in crucial discussions about student success.
  • - Supportive School Culture: The council promotes a school culture where students, parents, and staff feel valued and respected. By fostering a sense of belonging, GMCS aims to encourage a learning environment conducive to success.

Call for Applications

GMCS encourages interested individuals to apply for participation in the Equity Council. They are seeking up to 12 participants from across the district, selected based on a rubric established by the New Mexico Public Education Department. Applications are currently open and will remain so until June 30, 2026. The district invites students, parents, teachers, and community members who are passionate about supporting inclusive student success to consider applying.

The formation of the Equity Council represents a deep commitment to fulfilling the district's mission of upholding educational equity and achieving higher academic excellence. By actively engaging with the community, GMCS aims to dismantle barriers and create pathways for all students to achieve their full potential.

In conclusion, this initiative marks a pivotal moment for GMCS as it works towards a more inclusive and fair educational framework. The establishment of the Equity Council not only reflects the district's values but also its determination to create a welcoming and supportive environment for every student, supporting their journey to success.
