Hotel Sacher Vienna Marks 150 Years of Legacy with Artistic Sculptures by Erwin Wurm

Celebrating a Century and a Half of Hospitality: Hotel Sacher Vienna

The renowned Hotel Sacher Vienna opened its doors in 1876 and is set to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2026. To kick off this monumental year, the hotel unveiled two magnificent sculptures by famed Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. These sculptures, titled Step Big and Dancer, were revealed on March 26, 2026, during a grand ceremony featuring the artist himself, the Mayor of Vienna, Dr. Michael Ludwig, and the hotel's owner family.

Located at the entrance of Hotel Sacher, the sculptures are striking oversized handbags mounted on elongated legs, prompting reflections on the invisible baggage each individual carries, shaped by their personal histories and experiences. Wurm explains that through these playful sculptures, he aims to explore themes of self-identity, societal presentation, and how such perceptions differ in male and female contexts.

The owners of the hotel, Alexandra Winkler and Georg Gürtler, cherish this legacy, emphasizing that the establishment stands for both cherished traditions and ongoing renewal driven by passion and excellence over the generations. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to both guests and staff whose dedication has contributed to the hotel’s storied reputation. In celebration, Vienna's Mayor Dr. Ludwig also commended Hotel Sacher for symbolizing genuine hospitality and Viennese culture, serving as an ambassador for the city across the globe.

A Culinary and Cultural Icon

The journey of Hotel Sacher began with the creation of the Original Sacher-Torte by Franz Sacher in 1832. This legendary dessert, crafted meticulously through 34 steps, remains a culinary emblem of Vienna. The hotel's subsequent opening in 1876 by Eduard Sacher and his wife Anna established it as a prestigious venue for society's elite. Today, Hotel Sacher continues to be a privately owned, family-run five-star superior hotel and holds membership in The Leading Hotels of the World, having recently been featured in The World's 50 Best Hotels list for 2025.

To enhance the anniversary festivities, Hotel Sacher Vienna plans additional initiatives, including messages from notable figures and a captivating short film that combines animation with live-action footage. As the anniversary celebrations unfold, the hotel looks forward to reminiscing about its illustrious history while embracing modern art and culture.

As it stands on the brink of a remarkable milestone, Hotel Sacher reflects on 150 years filled with tradition, dedication, and artistic expression. Visitors to this iconic establishment can immerse themselves not only in its luxurious ambiance but also in the artistic collaborations that highlight its commitment to cultural relevance within the vibrant tapestry of Vienna.
