470 Years of Chiso: A Celebration of Tradition and Innovation
In 2023, Chiso, a venerable name in Kyoto’s Yuzen kimono making, proudly celebrates its 470th anniversary with a special exhibition at Nihonbashi Takashimaya. This unique event, running for six special days, invites visitors to immerse themselves in Chiso’s journey through tradition and innovation, exemplifying the themes of 'Universality', 'Heritage', and 'Exploration'.
The exhibition serves as a platform to highlight Chiso’s continuous evolution, preserving its rich history while adapting to contemporary aesthetics. Since its inception in 1555, Chiso has remained dedicated to kimono culture, blending intricate designs with a profound sense of beauty. Through various featured pieces, attendees can appreciate the artistic prowess and meticulous craftsmanship that define Chiso’s legacy.
A key aspect of the exhibition is the collaboration with contemporary Japanese artist Sohei Iwata. Seventeen new Yuzen-dyed pieces, created using the traditional tarashikomi technique based on Iwata’s original artworks, showcase vibrant floral motifs and embody a powerful sense of life. These extraordinary pieces are not just garments; they represent wearable art, connecting the wearer to a unique narrative that intertwines tradition with modern flair.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view a special presentation that delves into the deep-seated ties between Chiso and Takashimaya. This includes the display of wedding garments worn by significant figures, such as the 13th head of Chiso, Sozaemon Nishimura, and Takashimaya’s founder family. The exquisite designs of these garments reflect the artistry of their time, featuring traditional Yuzen patterns and embroidery techniques that epitomize the skills honed over generations.
Among the stunning works is the visiting piece 'Nagoya Obi: Rose Garden' priced at 748,000 yen and the hand-dyed scarf 'Cherry Blossom', available for 1,078,000 yen. Each item stands as a testament to Chiso's commitment to quality and beauty. This exhibition is a rare chance to witness the culmination of years of tradition and artistic endeavors, making it a must-visit for kimono enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
The event also includes a talk session on November 15 at 2 PM featuring both Sohei Iwata and Chiso's representative director Nobu Isonobu. They will discuss the intersection of kimono and contemporary art, addressing the exhibition’s core themes. The talk is open to the public and free of charge.
In addition to the main attractions, the 'Chiso Cultural Research Institute' will showcase their efforts in cultural preservation and education, focusing on the historical significance of kimonos and their role in contemporary society. The institute, established in 2016 under Chiso Holdings, aims to delve into the cultural assets related to Chiso while promoting the richness of Kyoto's artistry.
This exhibition not only commemorates a significant milestone but also reinforces Chiso’s commitment to future generations, ensuring that the art of Yuzen continues to thrive. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the profound beauty and spirit of Chiso, where tradition meets modernity in the world of artful wear.
