Crowdfunding Initiative for Hachijo Island Revival
The YMCA Setouchi has recently initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support the 16th edition of the "24-Hour Hachijo Taiko Challenge." This fundraising effort welcomes donations via multiple channels, including credit card and bank transfer. We invite you to contribute and assist in promoting this unique event.
What is the 24-Hour Hachijo Taiko Challenge?
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Hachijo Island, Tokyo, this unique event challenges participants to play traditional Taiko drums for 24 continuous hours. The event employs a relay format, allowing participants to take turns and keep the rhythm alive while sharing the beauty of Hachijo Taiko with the world. This initiative started with a vision to raise awareness of Hachijo Taiko and forge connections among people both locally and internationally. In 2021, the event adapted to include participants from outside Japan and welcomed online participation, further expanding its reach.

Call for Support
This annual event, essential in cultural heritage preservation, has faced challenges due to recent typhoons that damaged facilities and affected participants. Despite these adversities, there is a strong desire to restore the island’s spirit through the sound of Taiko drums. We are reaching out for assistance towards the event's operational costs and to support the recovery efforts for those affected by the natural disaster. We appreciate your generous contributions to our "Reconstruction Assistance Fund."
Relationship between YMCA Setouchi, Wise Men's Club Okayama, and Hachijo Island
Ikki Sato, a director at YMCA Setouchi and vice president of Wise Men's Club Okayama, has been involved with event operations and video streaming on Hachijo Island every year. In light of the recent typhoon, he proposed this support initiative, emphasizing the need to assist Hachijo Island and help maintain the event amidst challenging times. On October 21, Yoshio Okuyama, a Hachijo Taiko player, shared the damage report and sentiments regarding the event's continuity during discussions with YMCA Setouchi and Wise Men's Club.
A Glimpse into the Event's Background and Social Issues
The 24-Hour Hachijo Taiko Challenge promotes cultural connections through traditional Taiko drumming, facilitating music-loving communities to join hands regardless of geographical boundaries. This year, our main objective is to raise 1.5 million yen for operational and support funds, with additional goals aimed at enhancing recovery activities following the recent typhoons.
Engaging Support Projects
To enhance our outreach, we are also launching a "Support T-Shirt Project" concurrently. Taiko enthusiasts and organizations around the globe can order specially designed T-shirts. Part of the proceeds will be donated to support this campaign, underscoring the unity of Hachijo Island supporters.
24-hour Live Streaming
For those unable to attend in person, we will host a live 24-hour stream on YouTube, allowing anyone to enjoy the rhythm of Taiko drumming. This online participation continues to play a crucial role in connecting various communities.
Thank You for Your Continued Support!
Hachijo Island has faced substantial challenges due to Typhoons No. 22 and 23, including home damages and disruptions to essential services, though fortunately, no casualties were reported. Currently, residents still face electricity shortages and are living in evacuation centers. Though our preparations for the event on December 6-7 are ongoing, the situation remains fluid, and adjustments may be needed as circumstances evolve. Please stay updated via our website and social media for the latest news regarding the event and recovery efforts.
Your understanding and support are crucial, and we sincerely appreciate your collaboration in these challenging times. Together, we can ensure the tradition of Hachijo Taiko continues to thrive and that the spirit of Hachijo Island bounces back stronger than before.
